Thailand: Five firms to make 48 low-cost consumer items – ASEAN Economic Community Strategy Center

Thailand: Five firms to make 48 low-cost consumer items
Five leading manufacturers have reached an agreement with the government to make and supply 48 consumer items at low cost. The products will be 15-20% cheaper than those being sold now.
Cheaply priced consumer goods under the Thong Fah (Blue Flag) Pracha Rat scheme will be made available first via 5,500 small retail outlets and at retail and wholesale shops by April.
Commerce Minister Apiradi Tantraporn said after April the scheme aims to cover 20,000 outlets over the next six months and reduce people’s cost of living by 1.2 billion baht a year.

KBank fund transfers broad
Kasikornbank (KBank) has launched a cross-border fund transfer service for 13 Asian currencies, bilaterally, expecting to help customers save around 12 billion baht on foreign exchange this year.
Yesterday KBank claimed it is the first Thai bank to have a transfer service for the 10 Asean currencies and the yuan, yen and won, or the Asean Economic Community (AEC) +3 grouping.

Alibaba has signed agreements with Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce to help the country develop its e-commerce business. Alibaba will train Thai government officials about big data and artificial intelligence; help Thailand develop and efficient logistics systems and help small and medium-sized Thai firms expand their businesses through both international and local e-commerce sites.

Plans for special SIM cards for tourists have finally been scrapped by the national telecom regulator after facing strong opposition from the government, which says the idea would do more harm than good. The plan also drew heavy criticism at the first public hearing from participants who said it could lead to a potential threat to travellers’ privacy.

Cambodia: Emirates set to launch flights to Phnom Penh
Emirates Airlines will expand its presence in Cambodia by launching a daily passenger flight between Dubai and Phnom Penh, with a stopover in Yangon, as part of the Dubai-based carrier’s push into the region.

Launching on July 1, the daily flight will connect Dubai to Phnom Penh via a 90-minute stopover in Yangon, using a Boeing 777-300ER with both economy and business-class seating, the company said in a in a press release yesterday.

Brunei: CPI decreases by 0.3pc in January 2017: JPKE
CONSUMER Price Index (CPI) in January 2017 decreased by 0.3 per cent over December 2016. Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages Index increased by 0.4 per cent while the Non-Food Index fell by 0.5 per cent.

The decrease in the overall CPI in January 2017 was due to lower prices of Transport (1.0 per cent);

Vietnam: Ho Chi Minh City official wants to tax Facebook shops
The Ho Chi Minh City taxman should consider collecting taxes from an increasing number of people who are selling their stuff through Facebook to ensure budget revenue, the municipal industry and trade department has said.

Finding solutions to reduce tax losses for the municipal budget and to tax online traders was high on agenda at a meeting between the city’s administration and several departments and agencies on Sunday.

Thailand: Index plans CLMV activity to spur growth
Index Creative Village Plc, the country’s largest event organiser, plans to expand further in Indochina to cash in on opportunities arising from strong economic growth in the region.
This year will see an emphasis on consumer events such as concerts, trade shows and marketing campaigns in Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam (CLMV), said Kreingkrai Kanjanapokin, founder and group chief executive. Through its subsidiary ICVeX, Index has had a presence in Myanmar since 2011, and it will strengthen its operations there by focusing on lifestyle and entertainment events that target specific consumer groups.
