A Family Trip – Positive Relationships for Families

Supported by terre des Hommes Germany in Southeast Asia and Volkswagen Worker Council, The Family Trip is a family relationship activity under the program – “a Parenting Skill Curriculum for Parents and other Caregiver of Child Victims of Violence and Unlawful Care (age 6 – 12 years old).”

Last weekends, children, who are victims of violence and unlawful care, and their parents join the family trip with CPCR at the Amphawa Chaipattananuruk Conservation Project in Samut Songkarm Province. The activity allows participants to build a quality time together. They can do activities together which aims to strengthen the family relationship. In the meantime, parents of children can build their effective parenting skills in accordance with ‘a Minimum Standard of Child Rearing’. They understand their child development. They learn how to use a positive communication with their children. CPCR staffs also act as buddies to support each member.
Before the trip ends, CPCR asks feedbacks from them. They share that they are impressed and proud of what they did for their families. Although it is just a tiny moment, the power of love can be seen from all of them. Parents of child victims really want to do everything for their children. They want to change and be a better person for their children.

“I am happy. I can spend time with my mother and do many things together with her.”
“My mother has changed. She is calmer and rarely scolds me.”
“I am very happy because I stay with my kid”

Last May, CPCR conducts a 3-day 2-night art camp for child victims of violence and unlawful care. ‘The Art & Nature Play Therapy Camp 2022’ is taken place at Chet Sao Noi Waterfall National Park in Saraburi Province. 17 children, aged from 7 years old to 17 years old, and 9 volunteers & CPCR staff are on this trip. The art camp aims to promote sense of safety and security for children. In the meantime, children can express their emotions and practice their emotion management. When child feel safe, they would be able to build their self-esteem. There are many art activities for children such as the Nature Mobile. Before making art, children are asked to walk into the nature park and explore green environment. Children can use all of their senses to feel green nature. Meanwhile, they look for their art materials. Flowers, leaves and wooden sticks that fall down on the ground are the best art material. Children learn to respect nature around them but they are not allowed to pick up their materials from the tree. Later, when they feel calm and peace, they start making their crafts. At the end of every art session, children gather around and share their stories behind their creations. At this moment, they can release their inner stories and learn to listen the others at the same time. On the last day, children share that they have so much fun and time at the art camp flies so fast.

CPCR would like to thank you all volunteers and the park ranger who look after our children and make sure that our children are safe. The Art & Nature Play Therapy Camp is supported by Volkswagen Worker Council and terre des Hommes Germany.

Stories from a Social Worker (Story 2)

As we have mentioned before, we has reopened our shelter to look after child victims of violence and unlawful care who had been affected by COVID-19 pandemic. Although it is a short period of time, all children receive rehabilitation programs and educational supports. There is also a stage to prepare children before they can transfer to a new shelter. Ms. Ratchwan Singhaneti, our Social Worker, has shared her memorial moments while she looks after children.

‘…I am Sorry…’

One night, while working in front of the computer, I had heard someone cried. Suddenly, a girl walked straight and sat next to me. She said, this night, if she could sleep next to me. She told me that she had so many things to say but she could not do it. I gently petted her head and asked her to share anything that she wanted to say. She was paused for a moment and said that she had made someone sad. She had done bad things to that person. What I did at that moment was looking at her and listening intently all of what she said. When she finished, I gave her a hug and said that she was a brave person. I was impressed that she felt sorry of what she did and had learned from her mistakes. I was glad that she accepted it and wanted to solve problems. I added she did not want to be that kind of person. But she was just a little girl and could not control herself. Let’s solve these problems together. At that moment, I saw a smile from her face and she said why I never got angry at her and still did many good things for her. Was it ‘Love and Care’? I asked her how she was now. She said she felt much better. Then, I walked her to her bed and wished her sweet dreams.

Ms. Singhaneti concludes her stories that everyone, a child or an adult, can make mistake. But no one wants to be born to be bad. Forgiveness and understanding are the best gifts for everyone, especially young children. If they make a mistake, they always want a second chance from their parents or caregivers. Their forgiveness would change children’s lives forever.
