TISTR’s Innovation Ecosystem for Thai SMEs

In alignment with the policies and strategies set forth by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI) for the period of 2020-2027, TISTR has effectively utilized science, technology, and innovation to bolster the competitiveness of Thai SMEs, Startup and community enterprises, and has undertaken various initiatives aimed at advancing them, following by TISTR’s ‘4 Guiding Principles’ consisting of (1) conducting research focused on *bio-based* technologies to foster the growth of the agricultural, food, medical, and energy sectors, in accordance with the BCG economy model; (2) implementing *appropriate technologies* to address the specific needs of technology users; (3) serving as a *total solution provider* to offer comprehensive technical services to industries and SMEs alike; and (4) fostering community by *area-based* approaches to address the unique requirements of users in the areas, through TISTR’s innovation ecosystem. Its examples which are;

Food Innovation Service Plant (FISP) – fosters new entrepreneurs to develop their food innovative products, including product concept, product development (laboratory scale) and production technology (incubation stage), as well as, to provide production line for instant food and beverage, analysis and testing, and shelf-life assessment with GMP standards.

Pilot Plant for Dry Food Production Line – changes agricultural yields (e.g., durian, jackfruit, banana, pineapple, pumpkin and sweet potato) into health food products by innovative vacuum fryer machine.

Co-working Food Space – a learning center for knowledge of food processing and production standards (GMP)

Innovative Center for Production Industry Microorganism (ICPIM 1) – conducts R&D on food and health products with probiotic/prebiotic properties. Its laboratory is equipped with a Bioprocess room, freeze dryer and probiotic bank.

Innovative Center for Production Industry Microorganism (ICPIM 2) – conducts R&D on microbial strains utilized in agriculture – laboratory and production scales, and be amplified in semi-industrial scale. Its example product is biocontrol agent in liquid-, powder- and solid form.

Algal Excellent Center (ALEC) – conducts R&D on algae biomass as raw materials for sustainable utilization in various sectors – agriculture, food, drug, energy and environment.

Innovative Cosmetic Service Centre (ICOS) – provides total solutions and services on cosmetic production technologies to Thai SMEs, Startup and community enterprises.

Pharmacology and Toxicology Building – provides total solutions and services on toxicology testing in drugs, herbal products, dietary supplements, food additives, bio-chemicals, medical devices. Testing results from these services can be used for FDA registration.

Biodegradability Testing Laboratory (BioD) – provides biodegradation research/analysis services for common materials in compost, soil and water, including biological treatment of harmful substances in the environment.

SMEs Building – transfers technologies to the SMEs in Thailand’s Special Economic Zone (SEZ) by facilitating their R&D investment and R&D sites, with the aim to link research to industries – but limited to the target industrial sectors (e.g., automotive machineries and part manufacturing, health and wellness, future food, modern agriculture, energy and environment, and biotechnology). The customers will be entitled to privileges regarding the extension of 50% corporate income tax exemption for the next five years, or total corporate income tax exemption for the next two years, depending on their business types.

Innovation ecosystem administered by TISTR could bring comprehensive services to Thai SMEs, by utilizing STI to enhance the value of their products and services, improve their technology management, and boost their competitiveness in a tangible and sustainable manner.

🌿🍁🌿 ‘De-BUGs’ by TISTR-KU-CU won ‘Gold Medal’ and ‘WIPA Special Award’ in JDIE 2023 Japan 🌿🍁🌿

‘De-BUGs’, a bio-pesticide product from eggshells co-invented by researchers from TISTR (Dr. Nittaya Keawprak, InnoMat), Kasetsart University Kamphaeng Saen Campus (Dr. Duanghtip Kantha, Asst. Prof. Worapot Satadaechakul, and Ms. Napanuth U-songnoen), and Chulalongkorn University (Prof. Dr. Sanong Ekgasit) won ‘Gold Medal’ and ‘WIPA Special Award for Agriculture’, in the international event of ‘Japan Design, Idea and Invention Expo (JDIE) 2023*, held in Japan.

‘De-BUGs’ is an organic bio-pesticide product from eggshells which can be used to repel or kill insects (mealybug, snails and ants) for vegetables, flowers, fruits and crops, without harm to children and pets. When spraying its 0.5% concentration on mealybug colony, De-BUGs can crack on protective wax of the mealybugs within 15 minutes, paralyze them within 60 minutes and kill all of them within 1 day. Eventually, it can be broken down into calcium as a nutrient for plants (100% biodegradable, biomaterial).

Presently, it is ready to transfer this innovation to the farmers and the organic crop growers, with a nano-factory production system for both household and commercial scales, to support organic crop production and to reduce the use of pesticides in agricultural practice. For those who are interested in this innovation, please contact Dr. Duanghtip Kantha, at telephone number 034 351886.

*JDIE 2023 is an exhibition and competition for the worldwide students, inventors and companies gathering to share and communicate their works and innovations. The event was co-organized by World Invention Intellectual Property Association and Chizal Corporation and held on 7 – 8 July 2023, at Tokyo Ariake Garden Convention Center, Japan.
