REFLECTING ON A PRODUCTIVE MANAGEMENT RETREAT
Last week, on the 23rd & 24th July 2026, the Ministry of Revenue & Customs, convened its Annual Management Retreat, a key platform for aligning our leadership on strategic priorities and mapping the way forward.
The retreat was designed to review our performance against the Corporate Plan and 100-Day Initiatives, identify operational gaps and opportunities for improvement, strengthen collaboration across divisions, and set clear targets for revenue collection, border security, and service delivery.
Day 1 – Thursday 23rd July featured presentations from our Heads of Divisions covering the Corporate Plan Summary and 100-Day Initiatives, the ICT Upgrade Plan presented, and the key main projects of the ministry. Other key presentations included the ASYCUDA Upgrade (ASYHUB & National Single Window), Maritime and Mobile X-Ray Operations Plans, Decentralization Efforts, the Communications Strategy, the AEO Program Update, and an overview of Revenue and Customs Initiatives for the fiscal year. Following the presentations, Breakout Sessions on Border Security and Revenue Collection allowed teams to assess our Strengths, Weaknesses, and Opportunities for Improvement.
Day 2 – Friday 24th July continued with HOD presentations on the FY 26/27 Budget covering both Revenue and Expenditure, the Annual Procurement Plan, and the Staff Recruitment Update and Plan for the current fiscal year.
The outcomes of this retreat will guide our work ahead as we continue strengthening Tonga's revenue base and border security.

🌏 Strengthening Tonga's Tax System for a Healthier Future

The Ministry of Revenue & Customs, in partnership with the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Health, and Ministry of Commerce, Consumer, Trade, Innovation and Labour, successfully hosted the World Bank Health Tax & Tax Expenditure Mission from 20–22 July 2026 at the Fe'aomoengalu Customs Building.

Over three productive days, participants worked together to review Tonga's health tax system, strengthen tax expenditure reporting, and explore practical ways to improve revenue collection while supporting better public health outcomes.

The mission included technical workshops, consultations with key stakeholders, and valuable discussions that will help strengthen evidence-based tax policies and enhance fiscal transparency in Tonga.

🤝 We sincerely thank the World Bank team and all participating Ministries and stakeholders for their valuable contributions and continued partnership in building a stronger and more sustainable revenue system for Tonga.
