Pennelope Beckles—commonly referred to as Penny—is a Trinidad and Tobago, politician,
diplomat and attorney-at-law. Born on September 12, 1961, in the vibrant community of Borde Narve Village, Beckles has dedicated her life to serving the people of Trinidad and Tobago with unwavering commitment and passion. A proud alumna of the University of the West Indies and the Hugh Wooding Law School, Beckles was called to the bar in 1988 and established her legal practice in Arima just two years later, embodying the spirit of resilience and determination. In 2000, she became the elected Member of Parliament for Arima, serving with distinction until 2010. Throughout her tenure, she excelled in various ministerial roles, including Minister of Social Development, Minister of Culture and Tourism, and Minister of Public Utilities and the Environment, paving the way for transformative initiatives that lifted communities and enriched lives. In a landmark achievement, Beckles made history as Trinidad and Tobago’s first female Deputy Speaker from 2007 to 2010, where she championed equality and inclusion in governance. Her leadership continued as she served as the Leader of Opposition Business in the Senate from 2010 to 2013, advocating for the rights and voices of the underrepresented. Beckles’ dedication to advancing women’s rights on an international scale was recognized when she was appointed as Trinidad and Tobago’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations from 2016 to 2020. In 2019, she earned the esteemed role of Co-Chair President of the UN Women Executive Board, a testament to her commitment to creating a just and equitable world. Returning to local politics in 2020, she once again represented Arima as Minister of Housing and Urban Development, and later as Minister of Planning and Development, driving initiatives that shaped the future of urban living in Trinidad and Tobago. On May 6, 2025, Pennelope Beckles made history once more as she was sworn in as the Leader of the Opposition, becoming the first woman to hold this prestigious role in the People’s National Movement. Her journey is not just a story of political ascent; it is a powerful narrative of dedication, empowerment, and the relentless pursuit of progress. A lover of culture and the arts, Penny is also an avid sports fan having attained many achievements in table tennis during her university career. Some of the issues that she is most passionate about are youth development, gender, equality and justice. She is a strong advocate for the increased participation of women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), Sports and Politics. As a beacon of hope and a champion for change, Pennelope Beckles continues to inspire countless individuals in Trinidad and Tobago and beyond, showing that with passion and perseverance, we can all reshape the world for the better.
