It is without doubt, that crime and violence are among the most significant challenges which affects each one of us irrespective of age, gender, race, class, religion, ethnicity, or political affiliation. Despite many bold and ambitious efforts over the years involving both social and law enforcement approaches to reduce crime and violence, these issues remain as significant challenges. The commonality across religions serving the nation gives us common ground on which to build solid interfaith relationships.
More than ever, our beloved Trinidad and Tobago is in need of a divine intervention.

Hey Guys!!
Today we visit Fort George
Come join us on our journey!!
Did You Know?

Fort George, Formerly called La Vigie, was part of a complex of fortifications, the building of which began in 1804 under the direction of the then British Governor, Brigadier-General Sir Thomas Hislop. The fortifications consisted of sea defences and a series of supporting batteries: the York, Princess Charlotte, Abercromby and Cambridge on the lower slopes and the Cumberland to the North above the Fort. Considered impregnable, it was the major defensive position in the island, but never to experience military action.

In times of rumours of war, the merchants of Port of Spain would store their records and valuables at the fort. Fort George ceased to be a military establishment in 1846. A signal station was established there and continued operation until November 1964.

This signal station, built about 1883, was designed by Prince Kofi Nti, son of King Kofi Calcali of Ashantee, West Africa. He arrived in Trinidad on 1st July 1881, having become a ward of the British Government after a war against the Ashantees in 1872. A major restoration of the building took place in 1965, three years after Trinidad gained its independence.

Did you know?

In 1833 Thomas Buxton presented The Emancipation Bill in Parliament. The Act was passed and came into effect on 1 August 1834. One hundred and fifty one years later, on 1 August 1985 the government of Trinidad and Tobago declared Emancipation Day a national holiday to commemorate the abolition of slavery.

The history of the New World since Columbus re-discovered it is one of conquest, pillage, exploitation and forced migration of a people. For more than three centuries millions of people were forcibly transported from their homes in Africa, across the perilous Atlantic Ocean to the New World, where they were forced to labour on sugar plantations for the rest of their lives.

This enslavement of a people continued until events in Europe changed the fortunes of the West Indian and North American colonies. Humanitarians started questioning the validity of slavery, there was competition from beet sugar producers in Europe, and the advent of the Industrial Revolution spawned the rise of a new group of influential men in the British Parliament who believed that slavery was no longer economically viable.

As we celebrate this auspicious Day
May it be filled with love, peace, understanding, and happiness!!!!
Happy Emancipation Day from the members and staff of Port of Spain Community Oriented Policing Section
