Happy World Water Day!

Every year World Water Day is celebrated on March 22nd. This year’s theme is “Water for Peace”. This theme highlights the connection between water and how it is used to spark conflict and can be used to promote peace.

According to the United Nations, when water is scarce or polluted, or when people struggle for access to water, this can create tension.

The theme also centres on the value of fair and sustainable use of water and its role as a “stabilizing force and a catalyst for sustainable development” (United Nations, 2024).  For more information on World Water Day and the theme “Water for Peace” visit the United Nations’ website or click the link in bio.

Soroptimist International, Newtown Trinidad (SINT) partnered with SWMCOL to engage the students of St Ursula's Girls' Anglican Primary School for the United Nations International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste. The first phase of this engagement involved using plastic bottles to make planters, a tutorial on food waste, composting and propagating crops, followed by SWMCOL's Island Eco-Trip game. The second phase involved a tutorial on how to repurpose plastic bottles and turn them into beautifully decorated planters. On March 14th 2024, SINT and SWMCOL returned to St Ursula's to complete the final phase of the collaboration with a crop propagating and seed planting activity. The students were eager to plant their crops and expressed knowledge on the importance of planting our own food. Thank you to the Principal and Teachers of St. Ursula's Anglican School for accomodating our visit.

Women are the most likely to be affected by the degradation of the environment, as well as the ones who manage environmental resources such as water and soil on the most basic levels. That is why, on International Women’s Day, SWMCOL celebrates the contribution of women to the environment and encourages their inclusion in policymaking and decisions that affect the conservation of the environment.

Happy International Women’s Day 2024 from SWMCOL, Your Partner in Defence of the Environment.
