Mr. Randall Karim, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI), participated in the Ministry of Digital Transformation’s (MDT) panel discussion on Citizen-Centered Digital Government during their 2025 Symposium. Titled “From Ideas to Action”, the event, held on February 12, 2025, at the Hilton Trinidad and Conference Centre, also marked the launch of MDT’s National Digital Transformation Strategy (NDTS) and the Citizen Engagement Platform.
The MTI is proud to support the MDT in advancing the NDTS, especially in the area of Digital Government. This initiative aims to enhance service delivery, streamline public sector operations, and foster an enabling environment for digital governance. A key example of this effort is the MTI’s TTBizlink, the first Single Electronic Window (SEW) in the Caribbean. This secure business portal offers 24/7 access to a range of trade and business-related government services, linking multiple partners through a single electronic platform.
Another core area of focus for the Government of Trinidad and Tobago is e-commerce, a strong driving force for innovation, growth, trade and social prosperity. The MTI’s National E-Commerce Strategy is expected to launch in the near future, toward facilitating conditions where businesses can thrive, consumers can shop with confidence and innovation can flourish.

#HappeningNow Day two of #Catalyst2025 SME Conference is underway at the Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Industry and Commerce, “Propelling SMEs for Success in 2025” and focusing today on creative and agricultural sectors.
Bringing remarks on behalf of Senator the Honorable Paula Gopee-Scoon, Minister of Trade and Industry, Deputy Permanent Secretary Mrs. Ava Mahabir-Dass shared on government’s ecosystem for supporting SMEs, a combination of initiatives which span areas such as access to finance, capacity building, and market access toward stimulating the growth and sustainability of all types of firms, building their #resilience to future challenges.
“The ecosystem is not purely conceptual; it is a fully functioning system, encompassing several government ministries and agencies , educational institutions, and business organizations working together, directly and indirectly, to advance #innovation and #entrepreneurship,” she said.
The Deputy Permanent Secretary emphasized the importance of such initiatives given the US Department of Labour’s finding that about half of small businesses fail within the first five years.
“Our projects and programmes are not simply meant to help entrepreneurs and #SMEs start-up and survive, but to assist them in developing the wherewithal to continue year after year, through ups and downs, and ultimately to stand on their own as stable pillars of our economy.”
Delivering further on government’s efforts, feature speaker Senator the Hon. Kazim Hosein, Minister of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries, detailed a number of grants and subsidies offered for agriculture-related equipment, vehicles, security systems and more. He also encouraged participants to buy fresh, local produce and to “sow local, reap global.”
