MEDIA RELEASE

VENEZUELAN REPATRIATION

Port of Spain: Within the past week the Venezuelan Government made a request of the Government of Trinidad and Tobago to facilitate their provision of a repatriation flight from Trinidad to Venezuela. This request was made via the normal diplomatic channels to the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs.

The Ministry of National Security granted preliminary approval for this repatriation exercise as it was seen as a humanitarian effort by the Government of Venezuela. All arrangements were made by Venezuela.

When the details were provided of the aircraft that the Venezuelan Government was proposing to use to repatriate approximately one hundred (100) Venezuelan nationals, it was discovered that the aircraft was amongst those sanctioned by the United States of America.

Unfortunately, in those circumstances, the Ministry of National Security could not grant approval for the aircraft to come to Trinidad and Tobago.

The Ministry of National Security has reached out to the United States of America Embassy in Port of Spain to seek guidance and will work with the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, with respect to the possibility of a future repatriation exercise by the Venezuelan Government.

“No Child Left Behind” Programme receives fifty (50) new devices from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Global Bank Citi.

The Ministry of National Security through the work of the Morvant Laventille Initiative (MLI), a unit under the Ministry’s Office of Law Enforcement Policy (OLEP), continues to support the development of youth in the East Port of Spain district by improving the quality of life for residents in these communities, using the “No Child Left Behind” programme.

On Thursday February 11, 2021 at a small handover ceremony, which took place at Ministry of National Security, Port of Spain the MLI received fifty (50) new electronic devices from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), working in partnership with the USA for IOM and the Global Bank Citi.

The devices will be used for the development of youth in East Port of Spain communities, as part of its “No Child Left Behind Programme.”

The “No Child Left Behind” Programme was launched by the Minister of National Security, the Honourable Stuart R. Young M.P; in December 2020 and was created to improve the quality of life of communities in the East Port of Spain district, through the effective delivery of policing and other public services and programmes.

This programme was established to ensure that children in need are provided with the necessary equipment to access virtual learning during this challenging time brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic. OLEP through the MLI, partnered with the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) Hearts and Minds Programme, to identify students in the East Port of Spain area, from primary to tertiary level who are at risk of being ‘left behind’ in their quest for education.

Speaking at the handover ceremony was Director of the Office of Law Enforcement Policy (OLEP), Ms. Gale Charles who took the opportunity to thank IOM and Bank Citi for their donation of the fifty (50) devices.

Ms. Charles stated that, “these devices would go a long way in supporting the children of East Port of Spain who are in need of devices to access virtual learning during this time of the Covid-19 Pandemic… the OLEP-MLI/IATF team has been working assiduously to identify children most in need to ensure that they have access to an education and receive the support they so truly need.”

Representing IOM was its Head of Office, Project Coordinator, MS. Jewel Ali, who said, “that IOM was pleased to be part of such a worthwhile initiative such as the “No Child Left Behind” Programme and was elated to work with OLEP and the IATF, to help alleviate the vulnerabilities and challenges experienced by persons in the East Port of Spain area by providing them with access to remote educational opportunities during this very challenging time.”

The “No Child Left Behind” programme gives priority to students scheduled to write the Secondary Entrance Assessment (S.E.A.), Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) and Caribbean Advanced Proficiency (CAPE) examinations in 2021.

Members of the IATF Hearts and Minds Programme, who are in charge of distributing the devices, were also present to receive them on behalf of the schools and communities in East Port of Spain.

Please honorable sir, please institute the process by which taxi drivers must have their names and pictures stuck on their windshield back and front, or a copy of their DP.
