Ministry of Design Trinidad and Tobago

Ministry of Design Trinidad and Tobago The Visual Arts Unit of the Department of Creative and Festival Arts welcomed papers for the colloquium entitled: “Ministry of Design – from cottage industry to state enterprise”, which will took place on May 28th and 29th 2015.

Design is a multi-faceted global industry that affects all our lives on a daily basis – from the design of best vehicular path to negotiate Port of Spain traffic during Carnival, to signage on the path, to the design of a mobile app to solve that challenge. The design process is practiced on all levels of society and its impact is visible everywhere. Research suggests that design has a significant positive effect on the economies of countries by making industries more competitive, by stimulating manufacturing, as a tool for social development or even by addressing issues such as improving basic systems such as health infrastructure, crime prevention, education and transport. In Trinidad and Tobago, however, the general public often understands design to relate primarily to fashion, Carnival and graphic design and often does not see how design can impact the wider economy, even though, this same public interfaces with well-designed products on a daily basis, for example through a mobile phone, or a well-designed car etc. Trinidad and Tobago currently has no design policies and programmes though there is a focus on innovation and competitiveness. What if the government of Trinidad and Tobago directed substantial financial investment towards design initiatives on a national level? If there were a Ministry of Design in Trinidad and Tobago, how could this Ministry encourage and stimulate design, and create an awareness of its importance among the general population and other Ministries? During the colloquium we invited designers and non-designers to share their thoughts on this theme at this colloquium by contributing a paper or presentation. This page will continue to share feedback from the colloquium as well as information on the role and importance of design.

With DESIGN sadness I share.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the loss of our founder, mentor, and great friend, César. He was a gifted architect and teacher, two callings he effortlessly combined as one. He designed buildings and built a practice. Both will carry his legacy of sensitivity to our cities, respect for the environment, and dignity in the profession. I am profoundly grateful to my great friend and partner.”

Death knell sounded for Common Entrance - Barbados Today

DESIGN without political will/support is an intellectual exercise. The Honorable Prime Minister is certainly not the first to herald the call for the elimination or transformation of this archaic system (Common Entrance or Secondary Entrance Assessment) that has ignored generations of the english speaking Caribbean youth. It will take years but this is promising. Take note and follow Trinidad and Tobago in your upcoming election year. I will vote for any political party that initiates this transformation. Thank you Mia Mottley, show the boys dem how it's done.

Sweeping changes are on the horizon for Barbados’ education system, which will likely include the abolition of the controversial Common Entrance Examination, the introduction of ‘middle schools’ and a more diverse pool of academic opportunities for the country’s children. During the Barbados...
