HIV is everybody's business! Let's get to zero together! The thrust of the MOH is to build on gains made in the epidemic as well as to deepen and expand the multisectoral approach to reducing the spread of HIV.
(1)
Pursuant to this mandate is the recognition that HIV is everybody’s business and that one case of HIV is too much as we work towards getting to zero by 2015.
Mission: To challenge and encourage the national community to work in partnership to prevent and treat HIV and to mitigate its negative impacts, in an environment that promotes respect, care and support for all.

Thought of the week:
“The issue is not only the punitive and discriminatory laws but also that those impact attitudes in the society as a whole. The role of communities in changing the values and promoting justice for all is immense.” - Source: Dr Edward Greene, United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for AIDS in the Caribbean.

INTERIM HIV AGENCY/MINISTRY OF HEALTH HIV/AIDS AWARENESS AND PREVENTION: 2014 CARNIVAL CAMPAIGN
Risky behaviour exposes individuals to different life threatening situations. With regard to Health and HIV and AIDS our concern is risky sexual behaviours that heightens the risk of individuals contracting the HIV virus; through sexual assault, or consensual sex without the necessary precautions and the risk of default of those on antiretroviral medication and any other medication. With this in mind the Ministry of Health embarks on a pre-carnival HIV awareness and prevention campaign. The goal of this campaign is to heighten awareness and sensitise nationals and visitors at this time on prevention and accessibility tools which includes prevention messages for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases, availability and access to condoms, voluntary counselling and testing and ultimately availability of antiretroviral medication, treatment and care, which will also be extended to visitors to Trinidad and Tobago at this time. Consequently, the Ministry of Health has decided to embark on a robust campaign that targets specific populations of the society using already produced HIV material, traditional and new media channels to reach its intended audience.
Testing and counselling services and condom distribution will be available at fixed HIV Testing sites. Male and female condoms will also be distributed at selected Carnival events and at other NGO community events during the period.
OBJECTIVE OF THE CAMPAIGN
The objectives of this campaign are:-
1. To heighten public awareness on how to prevent HIV/AIDS and promote responsible behaviour
2. To bring awareness/sensitize the public ( locals and visitors) about the availability of Ministry of Health’s and NGO partners’ prevention services
3. To increase the number of persons who know their HIV status through voluntary as well as provider initiated testing and counselling.

Thought for the Day
Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope... and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance. ~Robert F. Kennedy
