The World Health Organization, last Friday, gave its first endorsement for the Chinese-made COVID-19 vaccine, clearing a shot from the state-owned firm Sinopharm for global use.

The decision, announced by the international health body after weeks of deliberation, is expected to help alleviate a severe shortage of doses in the developing world, as vaccine exports from COVID-struck India grind to a halt.

The Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine, which was approved by the World Health Organization (WHO), is safe to use and has an estimated efficacy of 79 percent for symptomatic and hospitalized cases across all age groups, according to a WHO press release.

Did You Know?

The National Gas Company of Trinidad and Tobago Limited (NGC) has signed a Gas Sales Agreement with Trinidad Nitrogen Company Limited (TRINGEN).

TRINGEN, with two (2) ammonia plants and gas turbine power generation, is 51% owned by National Enterprises Limited (NEL) and 49% by Yara Caribbean (2002) Ltd. It is one of the longest operating companies on the Point Lisas Industrial Estate and is NGCโ€™s fourth largest petrochemical customer.

With this agreement, these two plants will continue to operate and keep Trinidad secured as a key exporter of ammonia. This is another optimistic signal of the sustainability of the local energy industry.

National Disaster Prevention and Preparedness Month (NDPPM)-Week 2

Disaster Preparedness starts with YOU. Let's get ready together!

๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿพ In this the 2nd week of the National Disaster Prevention and Preparedness Month (NDPPM), we highlight the importance of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and their critical roles in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management. These CSOs, through their efforts, help to strengthen our nationโ€™s disaster resilience. ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿพ

Here are some ways that CSOs play a critical role in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM):
โ— In DRRM, CSOs use their understanding of community vulnerabilities, resource deficiencies and coping mechanisms to help build communitiesโ€™ capacity to prepare for and respond to disruptive events. This knowledge can be transferred and incorporated into plans for mainstreaming DRR into the local development planning process.

โ— CSOs design and deliver humanitarian aid in the face of disasters.
โ— These organisations develop and test new approaches in the field of Disaster Management, because of their proximity to communities and diverse organisational structures.
๐Ÿค๐Ÿฝ Together we can all work towards strengthening our nationโ€™s disaster resilience!
