Construction works on the Solomon Hochoy Highway Extension to Point Fortin (SHHEPF) continues apace!

The SHHEPF project includes the completion of the northern link from Dumfries intersection to Dunlop Roundabout with a connection from Mon Desir Interchange back to Fyzabad Road.

This project along with many others are expected to expand the national Highway Network and inevitably facilitate the following benefits such as inter-connectivity between rural and urban communities; and ease traffic congestion in Trinidad and Tobago!

These photos highlight night works on the SHHEPF last weekend.

Stay tuned for more updates on this project!

Coconut Facts

Brief History of the Coconut Industry

Trinidad and Tobago’s Coconut Industry came into prominence in the 19th Century. In 1863, this country exported 226, 791 dry nuts to England signaling the entry of this country into the world coconut trade. In 1901, there were 14,000 acres of land cultivated with coconuts in Cedros, along the coast of Galeota, Manzanilla and Mayaro.

In 1910, two (2) million pounds of copra was exported along with 3,332 gallons of coconut oil. By 1921, there were 30,000 acres under coconut cultivation in Trinidad and 10,000 similar acres in Tobago. The highest acreage cultivated was 45,000 acres in Trinidad in 1930. Over the next 12-26 years, large acreages succumbed to the Cedros Wilt Disease and those areas were re-planted with Sugar Cane. Production continued to decline steadily over the following years due to crop management and the devastating effects of the red ring disease. se.

Today, the production levels are at their lowest, with less than 400 acres of productive coconuts in Tobago, while in Trinidad there is currently about 12,000 acres under production, of which 8,000 acres consist mainly of old unproductive trees, while 4,000 acres under cultivation have mature and there are young trees.

To reinvigorate the coconut industry that has suffered a decline over the years mainly due to the red palm mite infestation, the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI) and the St. Patrick’s Coconut Growers Cooperative Society signed a General Agreement for Technical Cooperation in 2013.

Venezuelan Repatriation

MEDIA RELEASE

VENEZUELAN REPATRIATION

Port of Spain: Within the past week the Venezuelan Government made a request of the Government of Trinidad and Tobago to facilitate their provision of a repatriation flight from Trinidad to Venezuela. This request was made via the normal diplomatic channels to the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs.

The Ministry of National Security granted preliminary approval for this repatriation exercise as it was seen as a humanitarian effort by the Government of Venezuela. All arrangements were made by Venezuela.

When the details were provided of the aircraft that the Venezuelan Government was proposing to use to repatriate approximately one hundred (100) Venezuelan nationals, it was discovered that the aircraft was amongst those sanctioned by the United States of America.

Unfortunately, in those circumstances, the Ministry of National Security could not grant approval for the aircraft to come to Trinidad and Tobago.

The Ministry of National Security has reached out to the United States of America Embassy in Port of Spain to seek guidance and will work with the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, with respect to the possibility of a future repatriation exercise by the Venezuelan Government.
