"You must never be fearful of what you are doing if it is right." Helen Keller
Happy International Women's Day
'The Woman who changed Toastmasters'
In 1970, at a time when Toastmasters International was an all-male organization, Helen Blanchard became the first woman to join a Toastmasters club, initially using the name “Homer” to conceal her gender due to the organization’s restrictions on female membership. Her courage and determination paved the way for women in Toastmasters, and by 1973, the organization officially began admitting women as members.
Helen’s contributions extended beyond membership. In 1985, she became the first female International President of Toastmasters International, demonstrating leadership in a male-dominated environment and inspiring future generations of women in public speaking and leadership roles. During her career, she managed 130 government employees while actively promoting communication and leadership skills, reflecting her vision of empowering women in professional and public spheres.
Her legacy continues through awards and recognition in her honor. The Helen Blanchard “Trailblazer” award celebrates pioneers who emulate her innovative and legacy-building spirit, and the “Homer” award commemorates her groundbreaking membership. Helen Blanchard passed away in 2013, but her influence remains a cornerstone of Toastmasters’ history, symbolizing courage, perseverance, and the advancement of women in leadership and public speaking.
