The Minister of Youth Development and National Service,
the Honourable Fitzgerald Hinds visited the St James, Laventille and Malick Youth Facilities on Saturday 6th February, 2021.

“We have remarkable facilities delivered through significant investments, with which to implement the mandate of the Ministry of Youth Development and National Service (MYDNS). Our aim is to advance the youth development agenda and create safe spaces for young people to be trained; so they can contribute to national development,” said Minister Hinds.

It’s #waybackwednesday at @mydnstt 🇹🇹. This week celebrate the life of, recently deceased, cultural icon, 👑🎤 Singing Sandra!

In 1999, Sandra Des Vignes Millington became the second woman to be crowned 👑🇹🇹 Calypso Monarch, with her songs “Voices from the Ghetto” (Crying) and “Song for Healing”. In 2003 she again won the title, forever etching herself into the history books, becoming the first and only woman to win the title twice!

The Honourable Fitzgerald Hinds noted that Singing Sandra always reached out to the young people of Trinidad and Tobago he added "As Minister of Youth Development and National Service, I now feel indebted to her. It has become clearer to me that within the Calypso fraternity she mothered, nurtured, encouraged and set herself up as an exemplar to all of the young Calypsonians, particularly the females. So when I engaged in the commemoration event at Queens Hall I saw first-hand the reverence, love, respect and the honour that they all had for Singing Sandra from the fraternity.”

The Ministry of Youth Development and National Service is proud to celebrate this life and legacy of this luminary!

It’s Motivation Monday at @mydnstt 🇹🇹. This week we hear from Lawyer, Entrepreneur and Model, Rhema King!

St. Joseph's Convent, Port-of-Spain graduate 👩🏽🎓 was called to the Bar in two jurisdictions: England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 and Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 (Barrister) and Trinidad and Tobago 🇹🇹 ( Attorney -at-Law). She is fluent in Spanish and is currently learning Mandarin.

MYDNS: What inspired you to study law?

Rhema King: At first I wanted to be a doctor like my father. When I was 12 I wanted to be a cardiologist so I learned everything about the heart, and then at 14 I wanted to be a neurologist and I learned everything about the brain. I soon realised I had no desire to cut into anyone, I just wanted to help people. I am a natural advocate in my family so I decided to try law and I love it, it's my passion.

MYDNS: How do you balance law and modelling careers?

Rhema King: I found it difficult to balance practising law, pursuing my MBA and modelling. I had to learn to allocate the time to each task and it also required some sacrifice of not being able to sleep in on weekends and not having much of a social life, but it's a pandemic so learning to adjust and balance is a global endeavour. I find focusing on the task in front of me and allocating the requisite time has helped me to find balance.

MYDNS: What advice would you give to a young person who is struggling to cope with the Covid 19 pandemic? (e.g. financially, psychologically, physical health)

Rhema King: I witnessed my 17 year old sister struggle to cope while studying and writing her CSEC examinations last year, during this COVID-19 pandemic. I know it is not easy for the youth going through such a shift. You are all doing amazing and each step you take to get tasks done is a little win. Celebrate your little wins and don't be too hard on yourself, your mental health matters as much as your physical wellbeing. Speak out about how you feel, your feelings are valid. You are not alone, we are in this together. If you need help please ask, there are so many people who want to see you succeed, and I am one of them.

MYDNS: Please tell us the most inspirational bit of advice you've ever received and from whom.

Rhema King: My parents are my biggest inspiration and my father taught me the importance of having faith in God. His advice to me was that regardless of how bad things seem, it will get better for me, and all I need to do is to trust God and keep believing and working on my dreams. My mother taught me the importance of being vulnerable and opening up about when you don't see it getting better for yourself, and allowing people to see it for you and connecting with their faith in that way. Soon you will see it for yourself, what I see for you, and I see that you will get through this and all things will work out for your good.

It’s #waybackwednesday @mydnstt! This week we highlight Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Icon Richard ‘Torpedo’ Thompson @torpedott 🇹🇹🥇🥈🔥

Did you know Richard Thompson was only 23 years old when he secured an iconic Olympic 100m silver medal 🇹🇹🥈 behind the legendary 🇯🇲Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt?

Richard is currently the Trinidad and Tobago 🇹🇹 100m record holder with a blistering time of 9.82. He recently graduated from 👨🏾🎓 Louisiana State University with a Degree 📜 in Sociology. He returned to LSU to complete this degree 12 years after his Olympic success. In a recent interview with the Trinidad and Tobago Newsday he said "I wanted to be an example for our kids in TT as well to let them know that Richard is a good runner, Richard has achieved a lot at the professional and Olympic level, but he also values the importance of education and hopefully, by me coming back and making this next step, is an example to those who come after me.”

We at The Ministry of Youth Development and National Service aim to support initiatives that promote and encourage physical activity, nutrition and minimizes risk factors related to youth obesity and diabetes.

Making MYDNS ours.
