Today, as we observe the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem, we are reminded of our shared responsibility to protect one of our nation's most valuable natural resources.

Mangrove ecosystems are among the most productive environments on Earth. They provide critical habitats for fish and other marine life, protect our coastlines from erosion and storm surges, improve water quality and serve as powerful carbon sinks that help mitigate the impacts of climate change.

Healthy mangrove ecosystems are essential to sustaining our fisheries, strengthening food security and safeguarding the livelihoods of coastal communities. Their conservation is therefore not simply an environmental obligation but a strategic investment in the resilience and sustainability of our agricultural and fisheries sectors.

As citizens, we all have a role to play. By protecting our mangroves and adopting environmentally responsible practices, we contribute to preserving our biodiversity, strengthening climate resilience and ensuring a healthier future for generations to come.

Let us continue working together to protect our mangroves, preserve our natural heritage and build a more sustainable Trinidad and Tobago.

Senator the Honourable Ravi Ratiram
Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries
