Celebrating the Future Generations Thriving Through Entrepreneurship! 🥳

The DIA Youth Innovation Lab Trinidad and Tobago hosted the Graduation Ceremony for Cohorts 11-15 today at CARIRI's Centre for Enterprise Development (CED) in Freeport.

The DIA Youth Innovation Lab Trinidad and Tobago is a collaborative effort between the The Trust for the Americas (TRUST), the Organization of American States (OAS), the Citi Foundation, and the local implementing partner, CARIRI - The Caribbean Industrial Research Institute.

The programme's primary objective is to ignite the innovative spirit in young minds and budding entrepreneurs, inspiring them to craft solutions that create livelihood opportunities and stimulate economic development. This initiative aims to empower at-risk youths aged 16 to 34 by providing access to cutting-edge technology training, collaborative workspaces, specialized curricula, mentorship, and financial resources.

As part of the Graduation proceedings, we were honored to have The Honourable Foster Cummings, Minister of Youth Development & National Services, Trinidad & Tobago, deliver the Feature Address as well as Ms. Patricia De Leon Henry, National Director of the National Social Development Programme, Ministry of Social Development Family Services, and Mr. Quimey Del Rio, DIA Senior Project Officer, The Trust for the Americas, who shared their insightful remarks.

We were also joined by other key stakeholders from the Ministry of Planning and Development, Ministry of Digital Transformation TT, Intellectual Property Office of Trinidad and Tobago, Tobago Information Technology Limited, UTT - The University of Trinidad and Tobago, COSTAATT, Cipriani College of Labour and Co-operative Studies and ROYTEC.

As part of the day's proceedings, some of the key stakeholders also took the opportunity to tour our DIA Lab TT and Food Technology Centre.

Congratulations again to the future leaders, problem solvers, and change-makers of the world! We are proud to support the youths of our nation in their journey as young innovators and entrepreneurs and we are happy to help them shape a brighter and more prosperous future for Trinidad and Tobago.

CARIRI was invited by the Lakshmi Girls' Hindu College to participate in their annual Science Fair today. Our was eager and excited to interact with the students, presenting an engaging Chemistry game and conducting captivating science experiments designed to spark the students' curiosity and foster their interest in the world of science.

The students had the opportunity for a hands-on experience, actively participating in a range of experiments, including:

🧪 Iodine Reaction
🧪 Turmeric Art
🧪 Residual Chlorine Analysis
🧪 Qualitative Analysis of Phosphorus
🧪 Universal Indicator vs. Natural Indicator using sorrel extract

We were truly delighted by the fantastic feedback received from both the students and teachers, including comments such as:

- "𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑜𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑙𝑙 𝑒𝑥𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑤𝑎𝑠 𝑖𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡𝑓𝑢𝑙 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑒𝑛𝑗𝑜𝑦𝑎𝑏𝑙𝑒."

𝐇𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐲 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐇𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭 𝐃𝐚𝐲!

2023 has been a particularly challenging year for Urban Economies. The global economy growth itself is declining to about 2.5% and, apart from the initial COVID-19 crisis in 2020 and the global financial crisis in 2009, this is the weakest growth experienced since 2001. ((IMF), 2023).

Given the size of the contribution of cities to the national economy, the future of many countries will be determined by the productivity of its urban areas. ((UN-Habitat), 2022). Cities are the engines that create value that boosts economic recovery.

Today, 2nd October 2023, the Global Observance of under the theme "Resilient urban economies. Cities as drivers of growth and recovery", will look at how cities can position their economies to benefit residents.

29/09/2023

The International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, with the 2023 theme “Reducing food loss and waste: Taking Action to Transform Food Systems”, is an opportunity for individuals to prioritize actions that reduce food loss and waste and strive towards restoring better and resilient-ready food systems.

👉 Did you know that approximately 30% of all food produced globally is wasted? Reducing food losses and waste is essential in a world where the number of people affected by hunger has been slowly rising since 2014, and tons and tons of edible food are lost and/or wasted daily.

📢 Together, we can protect our environment, save money, and ensure everyone can access the food they need.

Let's make the Caribbean a greener, more sustainable place! 🌴🌟

Update on Port of Galeota Greening Project – CARIRI Delivers Energy and Carbon Emission Assessment Report

To all our POG Stakeholders, we are pleased to inform that within Q1 of this year, we would be implementing several recommendations from our recently completed Carbon Emission Assessment Report.

The Report was delivered by CARIRI in December 2022 and contains Energy Saving Opportunities ( ) and GHG Emission Reduction Projects that can be implemented at the Port, in the short, medium, and long terms.

The Energy and Carbon Emission Assessment began in August 2022 and included the surveying and assessment of existing infrastructure and equipment at the Port to determine their energy consumption patterns and carbon footprint.

In order to implement a comprehensive energy/carbon management system at PoG, two studies were conducted:
• An Energy Assessment and
• A Greenhouse Gas (GHG) /Carbon Footprint Inventory

2019 was used as the base year for both studies as this was the last year of normal operations before the COVID-19 pandemic.
