National Trust of Trinidad and Tobago The vision of the National Trust is focused on improving communities through the safeguarding of the built and natural heritage.

The National Trust of Trinidad and Tobago was established by Act No. 11 of 1991 and amended by Act No. 31 of 1999. The specific mission of the Trust is to lead the efforts for the preservation of Trinidad and Tobago’s built and natural heritage. The Trust sees its role as making improvements to our communities through the preservation of our built and natural heritage. The major responsibilities o

f the Trust include the following:-

Listing and acquiring such heritage property as the Trust considers appropriate;
Permanently preserving lands that are heritage sites and as far as practicable, retaining their natural features and conserving the animal and plant life;
Preserving, maintaining, repairing and servicing or, arranging for the preservation of heritage property and where such property comprises buildings, augmenting the amenities of such buildings and their surroundings;
Making provision for the access to and enjoyment of heritage property by the public;
Encouraging research into heritage property;
Making the public aware of the importance of our heritage;

On May 14th 2026, a team from the Heritage Preservation & Research Department and the Landmarks Sub-Committee of the National Trust joined representatives from NALIS to conduct the monitoring of the Old Fire Station. Our May edition of the Toute Bagai Lecture Series takes us to the Exchange Shiv Mandir in Couva for a special lecture exploring the history of Indians in Trinidad, the significance of the Exchange Sewala, and the role of the Tapestry Initiative in preserving and sharing community heritage.

The lecture will be delivered by Karishma Nanhu, Heritage Preservation Research Officer at the National Trust of Trinidad and Tobago and PhD candidate whose research focuses on Trinidad’s Indo-heritage and sugar production.

This is an opportunity to experience heritage where it lives: in communities, in sacred spaces, in stories, and in the places maintained across generations.

Embassy Trinidad and Tobago in partnership with the National Trust of Trinidad and Tobago are taking the Exchange Sewala Tapestry Experience, a 3D virtual tour of the Exchange Sewala and Shiv Mandir to a National Library near you! The Freedom 250 Digital Heritage Project was funded by the U.S. Embassy, with U.S.-based NGO CyArk, creating a 3D scan and oral history of the Couva Mandir.

The National Trust of Trinidad and Tobago worked with U.S. NGO CyArk in a project funded by the U.S. Embassy, Port of Spain, to create the Tapestry — a permanent record of the Exchange Sewala and Shiv Mandir using state-of-the-art technology that combines data from LiDAR devices with both aerial and terrestrial photogrammetry. This combination creates a photo-textured 3D mesh, capturing highly detailed millimetre-resolution details of core areas of the subject.

CyArk provides comprehensive documentation of the environment, and together with the digital model, community stories have been captured to ensure holistic representation of the site. CyArk has documented impressive heritage sites like Machu Picchu, and we are very proud to partner with them on their first Tapestry in the southern Caribbean.

This project is a product of a working relationship between the National Trust and the Exchange Shiv Mandir community, which has been forged over several years.
