🌺🌏 Hon. Minister Simon Kofe Delivers Remarks at the 11th Pacific Islands Conference for Nature Conservation 🇹🇻

Yesterday, Tuvalu’s Minister for Transport, Energy, Communication and Innovation, Hon. Simon Kofe, was pleased to deliver virtual remarks as part of the 11th Pacific Islands Conference for Nature Conservation, being held this week in Nouméa, New Caledonia.

Minister Kofe participated in the panel discussion, “Reclaiming Customary Law: Indigenous Knowledge, Environmental Stewardship and the Future of Protected Areas in the Pacific.” 🌊🌿

During his remarks, Minister Kofe shared his experiences working with issues relating to customary and Indigenous law as part of Tuvalu’s most recent constitutional review. His participation provided an important opportunity to contribute Tuvaluan perspectives to regional discussions on the role of Indigenous knowledge, culture, and customary practices in environmental stewardship and the future of the Pacific. 🇹🇻🌺

The Ministry thanks Hon. Minister Kofe for representing Tuvalu at the regional level and contributing to these important conversations on Indigenous knowledge and Tuvaluan culture.

🌏⚡ SPC Visits Tuvalu’s Department of Energy 🇹🇻🤝

Representatives from the Pacific Community (SPC) were in Funafuti last week, working with the Department of Energy under the Ministry of Transport, Energy, Communication and Innovation (MTECI) on important energy and fuel initiatives.

👩‍💼 Therese Johnson, Lead for the Pacific Energy and Gender Strategic Action Plan, is working with the Department of Energy team to support gender mainstreaming in the energy sector.

♻️ Meanwhile, Tuvalu Biogas Project Coordinator Tevita Kelesoma is following up with the Energy Team on ongoing biogas initiatives in Tuvalu.

These collaborative efforts support ongoing work to strengthen and develop Tuvalu’s energy sector while contributing to broader regional progress across the Pacific. ⚡🌱🌏

The Ministry sincerely thanks SPC and the Department of Energy for their important work and continued commitment to enhancing the energy sector in Tuvalu and the wider Pacific.

🌊⚓ MTECI Assistant Secretary and Acting Marine Director Attend IMO Meetings in London 🇹🇻🇬🇧

Last week, MTECI Assistant Secretary Asela Peneueta and Acting Director of the Department of Marine and Port Services, Captain Siila Tapuaiga, were in London attending the 22nd meeting of the Intersessional Working Group on Reduction of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions from Ships (ISWG-GHG 22) and the 2nd Extraordinary Session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC/ES.2) under the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Assistant Secretary Peneueta and Acting Director Captain Tapuaiga were accompanied by Grant Drecala and Captain Taasi Pitoi under the Micronesian Center for Sustainable Transport.

ISWG-GHG 22 and MEPC/ES.2 are important IMO meetings focused on negotiating and advancing global climate regulations for international shipping. 🌏🚢

These discussions are particularly important for addressing net-zero shipping frameworks and determining global approaches to fuel standards and pricing mechanisms.

As a Pacific Island nation with strong connections to the ocean and maritime transport, Tuvalu’s participation in these discussions is important to ensuring that the interests and perspectives of Pacific states are represented in global maritime policy. 🇹🇻🌊

The Ministry thanks Assistant Secretary Peneueta and Captain Tapuaiga for representing Tuvalu at these important international meetings and for their continued work on behalf of Tuvalu’s maritime sector.

🇹🇻🌏 MTECI Director of Tourism Travels to Palau for 55th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting 🇵🇼🤝

This week, Tuvalu’s Director of Tourism, Tepola Esekia, under the Ministry of Transport, Energy, Communication and Innovation (MTECI), is in Palau attending the 55th Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Leaders Meeting.

Director Esekia is participating in a special side event hosted by The Sasakawa Peace Foundation, Division of Island Nations, Ocean Policy Research Institute, focused on “People-Centered Economics: From Dialogue to Action.”

The side event aims to promote people-centered economic activities by connecting policy dialogue with practical action. Discussions are focusing on:

🌴 Community-based ecotourism
🌺 Preservation of traditional culture
💡 Strengthening entrepreneurial awareness
♻️ Waste management and its connection to economic activity and tourism development

The event also provides an opportunity for pract**ioners from the public and private sectors to share successful case studies, discuss challenges, and explore practical ways to strengthen participation in economic activities across Pacific communities. 🤝🌏

MTECI thanks Director Esekia for representing Tuvalu at this important regional event and contributing to discussions on sustainable, community-centered economic development.

The Ministry of Transport, Energy, Communication and Innovation (MTECI) extends its sincere and utmost thanks to the Department of Marine and Port Services, and especially the dedicated captains and crews of the MV Nivaga III and MV Manu Sina, for their tireless efforts in supporting two important national events.

During both the Tuvalu Island Leaders Assembly (TILA), or Fonotaga a Takitaki o Fenua o Tuvalu (FTFT), and the Fakaapo Tuvalu Arts Festival, the crews worked diligently to ensure that delegations from Tuvalu’s various islands—and even from locations outside Tuvalu—were able to travel safely and arrive in good time for these important events. 🇹🇻🌴

Reliable maritime transport is essential to connecting Tuvalu’s communities and enabling people to participate in important national, cultural, and community activities. 🚢💙

🇹🇻💻 MTECI ICT Officials to Travel to Taiwan for Month-Long Internship with Ministry of Digital Affairs 🇹🇼🤝

The ICT Department under the Ministry of Transport, Energy, Communication and Innovation (MTECI) is embarking on a new internship programme in cooperation with Taiwan’s Ministry of Digital Affairs.

In September, Acting Director of ICT Fini Iuni and Infrastructure Technical Administrator Walter Teiapa Teilauea will travel to Taiwan to undertake a month-long internship with the Ministry of Digital Affairs. 💻🌏

This new initiative under the Tuvalu–Taiwan partnership aims to strengthen digital skills, build professional capacity, and further enhance cooperation between Tuvalu and Taiwan in the ICT and digital sectors. 🇹🇻🇹🇼

MTECI is pleased to support this valuable opportunity for its ICT officials and looks forward to the knowledge and experience they will bring back to Tuvalu.

On 28 August 2026, in his capacity as Acting Prime Minister, Tuvalu’s Minister for Transport, Energy, Communication and Innovation, Hon. Simon Kofe, hosted the closing dinner for the Fakaapo Tuvalu Arts Festival.

The Fakaapo Tuvalu Arts Festival has provided a valuable opportunity for Tuvaluans living in Tuvalu and abroad, as well as non-Tuvaluans visiting and living in Tuvalu, to strengthen their understanding and appreciation of Tuvaluan cultural practices and identity from across Tuvalu’s eight islands. 🇹🇻🌺

The festival has also provided an important space for communities to share, celebrate, and promote Tuvalu’s rich cultural heritage and traditions. 💙🌴

The Ministry sincerely thanks communities from across Tuvalu, the Tuvaluan diaspora, and all visitors to Tuvalu for their support of Tuvalu’s ongoing efforts to strengthen cultural preservation and awareness.

🎉✨ It’s a new financial year! Let’s follow up with the Tuvalu Telecommunications Corporation (TTC) on their plans and goals for 2026/2027! ✨🎉

It’s a new financial year, so the Ministry of Transport, Energy, Communication and Innovation (MTECI) is continuing to follow up with all of our wonderful departments and projects and partner corporations to learn about their goals for 2026/2027.

Today, we checked in with the Tuvalu Telecommunications Corporation (TTC).

📍TTC is located across from the Government Building and to the right of the Tuvalu Police Service. It is open Monday to Friday from 9 am to 3 pm and on Saturday from 1 pm to 3 pm.

🔍 What does TTC do?
✅ TTC provides mobile services to the entire nation of Tuvalu
✅ TTC provides various forms of internet services to the nation, including fiber to the premise (FTTP), community WiFi in the remote Islands, and Starlink and Kacific services
✅ TTC resells Sky Pacific television services for the entire nation of Tuvalu
✅ TTC sells mobile devices and other electronic devices for the Tuvaluan community
✅ TTC protects and maintains the Tuvalu Vaka Cable and the entire TTC terrestrial network

🚀 In 2026/2027, TTC is focused on:
✅ Getting all the remaining Islands not currently connected to the mobile network fully connected
✅ Accelerating the deployment of the fiber network to the remaining homes on Funafuti

They’re especially excited about getting every Island connected to the mobile network. 🌏✨

🇹🇻💻 Digital Nation Hosts MSS–FSS Debate at Fakaapo Tuvalu Arts Festival 🎤🌺

Today, the Digital Nation Project, under the Ministry of Transport, Energy, Communication and Innovation (MTECI), hosted a debate between students from Motufoua Secondary School (MSS) and Fetuvalu Secondary School (FSS) as part of the Fakaapo Tuvalu Arts Festival.

The debate invited students to explore important questions relating to:
🌺 Culture and cultural preservation
🏝️ Statehood and Tuvalu’s future
💻 Digital sovereignty
🏛️ E-government services

Through the discussion, students were encouraged to consider key aspects of the Digital Nation vision, including how digital technologies could help preserve Tuvaluan culture, identity, and knowledge while supporting government services in a potential worst-case scenario where Tuvalu’s physical land is significantly impacted or lost due to climate change and sea-level rise. 🌊🇹🇻

The debate provided an important opportunity for Tuvaluan youth to engage with complex questions about their country’s future and to share their perspectives on how technology can contribute to protecting Tuvalu’s culture, identity, and sovereignty. 💙🌏

The Ministry sincerely thanks the Digital Nation Team for organizing this innovative programme, as well as MSS, FSS, and all participating students for their excellent contributions and enthusiastic participation.

✈️🇹🇻 Air Tuvalu Officials Attend Embraer Airline Business Seminar in Bangkok 🇹🇭🌏

From 19–21 August, Acting CEO of Air Tuvalu, Manraoi Vaaia, and Air Tuvalu Board Director Penielu Teo were in Bangkok, Thailand, to attend the Embraer Airline Business Seminar.

The seminar is an important regional forum focused on airline business, aviation planning, and business analytics, providing opportunities for airlines and governments to engage directly with Embraer, one of the world’s leading aerospace companies.

Key areas discussed during the seminar included:
📈 Passenger demand and regional aviation growth across Southeast Asia and the Pacific
✈️ Aircraft options, including the E175, E190-E2, and E195-E2, with discussions on passenger capacity, range, fuel efficiency, and operating economics
🌏 Potential new routes and how smaller regional aircraft can improve connectivity to underserved destinations
💰 Aircraft acquisition, leasing, financing, and fleet replacement
🏝️ Opportunities for smaller countries to strengthen air services without requiring larger aircraft

The seminar also provides opportunities for participating airlines and governments to explore practical follow-up initiatives, including feasibility studies, aircraft performance analyses, and commercial proposals.

Engagements such as this are valuable as Tuvalu continues to explore options for strengthening its domestic and regional air connectivity and ensuring that aviation services are sustainable and responsive to the needs of Tuvaluans. 🇹🇻✈️
