💻📊 Strengthening Partnerships for Better Data in Tuvalu 🇹🇻

As part of the PacStat Innovative Experiments 4, the Central Statistics Division (CSD) is proud to highlight the implementation of the Statistical Population Register (SPR) – Phase 1, which aims to integrate administrative data from Health and Immigration with census data to produce more timely and updated population estimates.

To support this collaboration, laptops were presented to the Director of Immigration, Ms. Petsyio K Samuelu, and the Director of Health, Dr. Nokise Simeona.

We sincerely thank both departments for their continued partnership and commitment to strengthening data systems in Tuvalu, and the Pacific Community (SPC) for their technical support throughout the project. We look forward to working closely together to improve the quality, accessibility, and timeliness of statistics for national development.

Together, we build stronger data for a stronger Tuvalu. 🤝📈

📘⚕️ New Report Released: Making Death Count in Tuvalu ⚕️📘

The Central Statistics Division (CSD) is pleased to share the publication of the report:
“Making Death Count Tuvalu: Cause of Death Analysis from the Pacific Regional Cause of Death Coding Service (July 2024 – June 2025)”.

This report provides a summary of the main causes of death based on Medical Certificates of Cause of Death (MCCDs), and supports improved reporting, data quality, and certification practices. It also highlights key areas for policy development and health interventions to help reduce preventable deaths in Tuvalu.

📊🇹🇻 Welcoming PFTAC National Accounts Mission 🇹🇻📊

The Central Statistics Division (CSD) was pleased to welcome two consultants from the Pacific Financial Technical Assistance Centre (PFTAC) — Ms. Donna Marie Grcman and Mr. Michael Andrews — for the National Accounts Mission, which commenced on 3 March.

During her short visit (3–5 March), Ms. Grcman met with the Secretary of Finance, Mr. Nuausala Nuausala, representatives from the Tuvalu National Provident Fund (TNPF) — Ms. Lonise Sakaio and Mr. Tuisani Teveia — and the Director of Inland Revenue, Mrs. Sania Teisini, to discuss strengthening data sources for the compilation of Tuvalu’s National Accounts. Although her visit was briefly disrupted by a power blackout, it was pleasantly complemented by a short island tour.

Mr. Andrews will remain in-country until 10 March to continue advancing this important work.

CSD sincerely thanks Ms. Grcman and Mr. Andrews for their technical support and acknowledges PFTAC for its continued assistance in strengthening Tuvalu’s National Accounts.

We wish Ms. Grcman a safe journey home and look forward to continued collaboration. 🤝📈

📊📈 Consumer Price Index – Q4 2025 Released 📈📊

The Central Statistics Division (CSD) is pleased to announce the release of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) Report for the Fourth Quarter of 2025, including detailed tables available in Excel format.

Key highlights:
• All-Group CPI: Increased to 1336, up from 1323 in Q3 2025
• Quarterly inflation: 1.0%
• Annual inflation (Q4 2024 – Q4 2025): 5.3%
• Average annual inflation (2025): 2.8%

The Central Statistics Division (CSD) is pleased to announce the publication of the Tuvalu Disability Monograph – An Analysis of the 2017 and 2022 Population and Housing Censuses.

This important report provides a detailed analysis of disability data from the 2017 and 2022 Censuses, enhancing understanding of the living conditions, education, economic activities, and health of children, women, and men with disabilities in Tuvalu. It also highlights inequalities in opportunities and access to services between persons with and without disabilities.

🌱📊 Training of Enumerators – 2026 Tuvalu National Crops & Livestock Census 📊🌱

Preparations are well underway for the 2026 Tuvalu National Crops and Livestock Census, with the Training of Enumerators taking place from 19–27 February 2026 at TPCC Room 2.

The training is hosted by the Department of Agriculture, in partnership with the Central Statistics Division (CSD), with technical support from the FAO Subregional Office for the Pacific (FAO SAP) and the Pacific Community (SPC).

We sincerely acknowledge Dr. Peleti Pole, focal point from the Department of Agriculture, for his leadership and coordination, and Mr. Guy Oswald Obama, FAO’s International Statistics Specialist, for his invaluable technical expertise and guidance. Their contributions are greatly strengthening the quality and readiness of this important census.

We also extend our appreciation to FAO for funding this national activity and to SPC for providing technical support.

The 2026 Census will generate vital data on crops and livestock production, supporting planners and decision-makers to strengthen food security, agricultural development, and sustainable planning in Tuvalu.

🌺 Fakafetai Lasi, Ms. Grace Alapati 🌺

The Central Statistics Division (CSD) pays heartfelt tribute to our Government Statistician, Ms. Grace Alapati, whose service to CSD and the Government of Tuvalu spans more than 20 years. Her dedication, leadership, and deep institutional knowledge have been instrumental in strengthening Tuvalu’s national statistical system and mentoring generations of statisticians.

Ms. Alapati’s departure marks a significant loss to CSD and the wider public service. While she will be continuing her journey in New Zealand to focus on family commitments and access medical support, her contributions and legacy will remain firmly embedded in our work.

On behalf of the Central Statistics Division and the Government of Tuvalu, we extend our sincere gratitude for her years of committed service. You will be deeply missed by all of us at CSD. We wish you every success and good health in the next chapter. 💙

The Tuvalu Central Statistics Division is deeply saddened by the passing of Scott Michael Pontifex, who passed away on 26 December 2025 at the young age of 48.

Scott made an immense contribution to statistical development across the Pacific and was a kind, generous, and dedicated supporter of National Statistics Offices in the region. His guidance, humility, and unwavering willingness to help will always be remembered.

Scott’s funeral service will take place today, 23 January, at Old Saint Paul’s Cathedral at 1:30pm (NZ time).

Our thoughts and prayers are with his beloved wife Loraine and son Liam, and with all who mourn his loss. Scott will be deeply missed, but his legacy will live on through the many lives and institutions he touched. 🕊️

🌺 Farewell and Fakafetai Lasi, Ms. Papauta Makoi 🌺

The Central Statistics Division (CSD) bids a heartfelt farewell to Ms. Papauta Makoi, one of our senior officers, who has dedicated six years of outstanding service to the Division and to the people of Tuvalu.

During her time with CSD, Ms. Makoi played a key role in major national statistical activities, including the MICS 2019, Long Form Census 2022–2023, and the Statistical Population Register (SPR) project. Her professionalism, commitment, and quiet leadership have greatly strengthened our work and our team.

Ms. Makoi will be pursuing the next chapter of her journey in New Zealand with her family. While we are sad to see her leave, we fully support her next chapter and wish her every success and happiness in her future endeavours.

On behalf of the Central Statistics Division and the Government of Tuvalu, we sincerely thank Ms. Makoi for her hard work and dedicated service.

You will truly be missed by all of us at CSD. Fakafetai lasi. 💙

🌱📊 Regional Training on Agri-Food Systems Statistics 📊🌱

The Central Statistics Division (CSD) is pleased to share that Mr. Angus Amasone (CSD) and Mr. Pinau Tao (Department of Agriculture) attended the Regional Training Workshop on Agri-Food Systems (AFS) Statistics in the Pacific, held from 24–28 November in Apia, Samoa.

The training strengthened knowledge on agricultural and agri-food systems statistics, the AFS framework, and the use of data to support evidence-based planning and sustainable development.

CSD sincerely thanks the FAO for funding and organizing the workshop, and the Samoa Bureau of Statistics for hosting a successful and enriching training.
