Participatory Plantation Forestry Programme - Panda Miti Kibiashara This page aims at communicating the activities of Participatory Plantation Forestry Programme

The Governments of Tanzania and Finland are jointly implementing the Participatory Plantation Forestry Programme (PFP 2) following an agreement made in May 2013. The main goal of the programme is to increase rural income through proper forest management skills, the use of forest quality seeds and taking into consideration sustainable land use planning. The PFP 2 is being implemented in six (6) Districts of the Southern Highland Regions of Njombe, Iringa and Morogoro. The specific Districts include, Njombe, Makete, Ludewa, Mufindi, Kilolo and Kilombero. The implementation started in January 2013
The key stakeholders of the programme are: The Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, Tanzania Forest Service Agency and the respective District councils in the Programme area. Other stakeholders are International Organizations, Tree Growers, Non Governmental Organizations, Community Based Organizations, the private sector, research and training institutions. The identified success factor of the programme are that the market demand of forestry products from plantation forests is expected to increase from 1.5 to 3.7 million cubic metres of round wood by the year 2025. During such period Tanzania shall experience more populations increase, improved economy and mass mitigation to towns and cities. The programme encourages the rural population to get involved in commercial tree growing and processing to increase their income since there is great market demand of forest products. It is anticipated that tree growing will be successful in the Southern Highlands due to existing suitable soils, reliable rainfall, available undeveloped land and above all the communities in the industrious people and have demonstrated the traditional of linking trees.

Fire behaviour training aid invention – a first for Tanzania

On 8 July an exciting new fire behaviour training aid was tested at the Forestry and Wood Industries Training Centre (FWITC).

Fire specialist Tiaan Pool from the Forestry programme of the Nelson Mandela University of South Africa proposed the idea of building a fire behaviour demonstration table to teach students the behaviour of fire in the presence of wind and steep slopes.

Tiaan is a wildfire consultant with PFP2 who has a partnership with FWITC.

Mr Chamba Pamba Fire Training Instructor had a meeting with the technical team in the workshop at FWITC and they designed and built two tables that are fully adjustable to represent slopes. (See figures 1 & 2 Below).

The surfaces of the tables were constructed with a fine metal mesh.

In the demonstration of fire behaviour, grass is fixed to the mesh and then set alight.

Once a year, the Second Forestry and Wood Industries Training Centre held its grand graduation ceremony at its campus in Mafinga-Iringa. This year was particularly special, as it marked the culmination of two years of hard work, growth, and camaraderie among the graduating class.

Students learned not just academic subjects but also practical skills in forestry and wood processing practices. It was a place where the bond between humans and nature was nurtured, and where every graduate emerged as a steward of the forest.

As the day of the graduation ceremony arrived, the forest seemed to celebrate with them. Sunlight filtered through the canopy above, casting a gentle glow over the gathering of students, faculty, and families. The ceremony began with a heartfelt speech from the school's principal (Ms Berthan Paul Odelo), emphasizing the importance of the graduates' role in preserving the natural world (forestry).

Each graduate was called forward one by one to receive their certificates in Forestry and Wood processing attendant—a symbol of their commitment to forestry and wood processing stewardship.

After the formalities, the graduates and their families gathered for a celebratory picnic at the college. There was laughter, reminiscing about shared experiences, and anticipation for what lay ahead. Some talked excitedly about their plans to work for TFS and others for the private sector, while others dreamed of starting their own initiatives to promote sustainability in their communities.

The Second Forestry and Wood Industries Training Centre’s graduation wasn't just a ceremony—it was a testament to the power of education, passion, and a deep-rooted connection to forestry and wood processing.
