On 17 January 2026, the High Seas Treaty (BBNJ Agreement) enters into force, marking a historic milestone for global ocean protection and international cooperation.

This achievement reflects decades of dedication, negotiation, and advocacy by governments, scientists, Indigenous Peoples, civil society, and ocean champions worldwide.

We celebrate this moment not only as a victory, but as a call to sustain momentum toward universal ratification and effective implementation for the ocean and for future generations.

Let Hope Beneath the Waves 🌊

As we step into 2026, Zanzibar’s ocean stands at a critical crossroads.
Rising sea temperatures, coral reef degradation, plastic pollution, overfishing, and destructive practices continue to threaten marine life, coastal livelihoods, and food security.

From coral reefs and seagrass to mangroves and iconic species like sea turtles, dolphins, sharks, and rays—our ocean is under pressure from climate change, unsustainable fishing, and growing tourism impacts.

Yet, hope still lives beneath the waves.

With urgent conservation, responsible tourism, and sustainable ocean management, recovery is possible.

🌱 2026 must be the year we protect what protects us.

As we close 2025, we extend our deep gratitude to our partners, supporters, volunteers, and communities who made this journey possible. Together, we are restoring ecosystems, empowering youth, and protecting our ocean for the future.

🌊 OCEAN BOOT CAMP 2025 TANZANIA 🌊

I am truly excited and deeply grateful for the opportunity to participate in the Ocean Boot Camp 2025, organized by SOA Tanzania. This experience has been a powerful moment of learning, growth, and strengthening my commitment to ocean conservation and leadership.

Throughout the boot camp, I gained valuable skills including:
🔥 How to develop an effective pitch
🔥 Understanding and using the Business Model Canvas
🔥 Practical beekeeping training
🔥 Expanding creativity and innovation in ocean-related projects

I also had the chance to expand my network by connecting with key partners such as VSO Tanzania, as well as several SOA leaders including Mr. Forbi, SOA Africa Lead, and the SOA Kenya Lead. These connections have been incredibly inspiring and meaningful for the future of our work.

This boot camp has greatly strengthened my capacity to implement and manage projects under SOA Zanzibar, and it has given me renewed motivation to continue protecting our ocean resources.

On behalf of SOA Zanzibar, we extend our sincere appreciation to SOA Tanzania for granting us this wonderful opportunity to join the Ocean Boot Camp. This marks a strong beginning for continued collaboration and impactful ocean conservation work.

Meet , the first Hub featured in SOA's Spotlight Series!

In 2025, SOA Zanzibar has restored degraded coastlines, planted thousands of mangroves, and trained youth in sustainable livelihoods. Youth engagement remains at the heart of their work, teaching young participants about the ecological role of mangroves, sustainable conservation practices, and alternative livelihoods such as beekeeping, crab and fish farming, eco-tourism, and coastal agriculture.

With support from SOA grants and partners, they are turning action into lasting impact — boosting biodiversity, reducing pollution, and building resilient coasts while inspiring the next generation of environmental stewards.

🌍 World Mangrove Planting Day – July 26, 2025 🌱
In celebration of World Mangrove Planting Day, SOA Zanzibar, in collaboration with the Department of Forestry of the Government of Zanzibar and other environmental conservation partners, carried out a coastal cleanup at Fujoni Beach.

During the cleanup on July 26, 2025, we successfully collected over 500 kg of plastic waste, including plastic bottles, bags, sacks, cigar bottles, and other marine litter.

This activity aimed not only to support mangrove planting efforts but also to raise awareness on the impact of plastic pollution on coastal ecosystems and the importance of community-led environmental action.

Together, we are working towards a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable coastline for all. 🌊🌿
