Tornado: "It’s hard, but it’s possible"

Jaime, a soldier of the 47th Separate Mechanized Brigade with the call sign “Tornado,” is a volunteer in the Armed Forces of Ukraine from Colombia. He held a position in the Sumy region for 110 days, repelling attacks by Russian occupiers. Having stared death in the face more than once, he overcame his fear, managed to maintain his composure and cool-headedness, complete his mission, and return. During our conversation, the hero was recovering from superhuman exertions, but once his rest is over, he is ready to return to battle for Ukraine.

“I’m ready to fight” – Forrest, Ukrainian Army Volunteer from North Carolina
North Carolina is a place of deep forests and mountain ridgelines — where ancient pines climb into the sky and life moves at its own pace. It’s far from the frontlines of the Russo-Ukrainian war. But at 28, Forrest chose to leave his homeland behind, crossing an ocean to join the 47th Mechanized Brigade “Magura” and take part in a war that was never meant to be his — until he made it so.

Kiwi wasn’t a soldier. He was a student, studying mechanical engineering in Auckland, New Zealand. He had no military experience, no training — nothing that would prepare him for the battlefield. But when Russia invaded Ukraine, something shifted. He knew he couldn’t stay away. So he left his studies behind and came to Ukraine to join the 47th Mechanized Brigade “Magura”.

On this day of renewal and hope, we share the story of Moose — a violinist from Alaska who chose action over indifference. Now training in Donbas with the “Spalakh” battalion, he is learning to operate drones and defend the very idea of freedom.

His journey reflects the spirit of this day — sacrifice, faith, and the will to stand for what is right.
