Care For Karamoja

Care For Karamoja Care for Karamoja is a conservation initiative aimed at improving the lives of people and wildlife in the Karamoja region of northeastern Uganda.

Karamoja is a region in the northeast corner of Uganda, which is home to 65 endangered Rothschild’s giraffes, 900 ostriches, and over 785,000 food insecure people. Care for Karamoja is working with several partners, including the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre, to implement a program to instruct local farmers in the sustainable, captive breeding of ostriches. This program will reduce poaching pr

essure on giraffes & ostriches, plus improve the lives of people by providing: a food source, diversified incomes, employment, and valuable training in husbandry and business skills that can be utilized beyond the scope of this project.

It's been a few weeks since the Care For Karamoja team returned from Uganda where we joined forces with Giraffe Conservation Foundation to conduct a census of the giraffe population in Kidepo Valley National Park. The total number of giraffes found during the census comprises less than half of the number we had been expecting. While the number is much lower than we had hoped, this census will help us establish a good baseline to plan for future conservation action.

Big news from Uganda! These two chickens were successfully hatched from the incubator at UWEC! They are now living with a rescued ostrich chick, and we are one step closer to hatching ostriches for the farming and reintroduction program. Congrats UWEC Team!

We've got amazing zoo partners and we hope they'll jump on board!

In an effort to create a broad network of awareness for this film’s message we have developed the Zoo Partners Program. To help the news about giraffes’ population decline to go viral, we are seeking to partner with zoos that currently house giraffes in their facilities.

We're so proud to have such amazing partners! Congratulations UWEC - Entebbe Zoo!
