The People’s Front for Freedom has learnt of the forcible evacuation of our leader, Dr. Kizza Besigye from the High Dependency Unit on Level 6 of Mulago National Referral Hospital by armed prison and military personnel.
Ten days after his medical collapse in court, Dr. Besigye has still not fully regained consciousness. He remains in a critical condition unable to speak, walk or receive the specialized care required for his recovery. Rather than facilitating his immediate transfer to an advanced medical facility capable of managing his severe condition, the regime has chosen to abduct a critically ill patient from a hospital bed under the cover of secrecy.
As of now, neither his family, his legal team nor the leadership of the People’s Front for Freedom have been informed of his current location or the state of his health. This deliberate concealment of a high-profile political leader in medical distress is a flagrant violation of his fundamental human rights and a direct threat to his life.
Given the severity of his condition and the failure to stabilize him after 10 days, we demand that the government immediately cease holding him in custody and permit his transfer abroad for specialized life-saving medical treatment.
We hold the government of Uganda, the leadership of the Uganda Prisons Service and the military collectively accountable for the life, health and well-being of Dr. Kizza Besigye.
We call upon the international community, human rights defenders, and all citizens of Uganda to stand with us in demanding the immediate disclosure of his whereabouts, his unconditional release, and his transfer to specialized medical care.
