Butaleja — The National Resistance Movement - NRM national vice chairperson, Al-Hajji Moses Kigongo, has called on party leaders in Butaleja to set aside personal differences and unite to strengthen the Movement’s grassroots structures, stressing that the party is “bigger than all of us.”

In a meeting with NRM leaders on Sunday, Kigongo urged members to uphold discipline and loyalty, warning that internal wrangles and support for independent candidates were undermining the NRM’s unity.

“Let us forgive our colleagues and remember that the Movement is bigger than all of us,” Kigongo said. “If the structures collapse, the Movement will collapse too. We are here because of those structures.”

Women have been urged to embrace regular cervical cancer screening as one of the most effective ways to prevent and control the deadly disease.

The appeal was made by Dr. Nixon Niyonzima, the Head of Research and Training at the Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI), who represented the Executive Director during the official handover of cancer treatment equipment to the leadership of Mbarara City and Mbarara District.

The equipment was delivered by the Ministry of Health, the Uganda Cancer Institute, and the Korea Foundation for International Healthcare (KOFIH) as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen cancer diagnosis and treatment services in Uganda.

Dr. Niyonzima revealed that cancer of the cervix is the most common gynecological illness among women in Uganda, with about 7,000 new cases reported every year. He expressed concern that eight in every ten women seek medical attention when the disease has already progressed to advanced stages, stage three or four when treatment becomes difficult.

He noted that many women in the country continue to silently die from a disease that could be controlled or even cured if diagnosed early. He therefore urged women to take advantage of screening opportunities whenever they arise.

Dr. Mutungi Gerald from the Ministry of Health echoed these remarks, stressing that cervical cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women in Uganda. He said the ministry is working with partners to improve access to screening and treatment services across the country.

Eunhyeok Lee, Health Specialist and Program Manager at KOFIH, called on health workers in Mbarara to handle the donated equipment with care to ensure effective and sustainable use in serving patients.

The Mbarara District Health Officer, Dr. Peter Ssebutinde, applauded the donation, saying that the new machines will go a long way in enhancing the region’s capacity to diagnose and treat all types of cancers.

On his part, Sam Muganda, the Assistant Resident City Commissioner (RCC) for Mbarara City, welcomed the initiative, noting that it will help detect cancer cases earlier and save more lives in the community.

The items delivered include 14 cervical cancer screening beds, 14 screens, 1,600 pap smear test kits, 1,600 HPV test kits, three colposcopes, two LEEP machines, two GeneXpert machines, 14 thermocoagulators, as well as reagents and consumables.
