DAILY FIVE

Five signs that you are living beyond your means.

5. Zero savings

One of the sure signs that you are living beyond your means is not having any money to save.

How much money do you have left over after paying rent, buying food etc?

Calculate what that is and see if you can afford to do this every month. If you cannot afford to save 5% of your salary then you are living beyond your means.

Savings are important because they help us prepare for the future. Whether it is an emergency fund that you can use for medical expenses or in case you lose your job, it is always good to have a little something stowed away.

4. You Don’t Have Any Money Left at the End of the Month

Forget the January blues, are you always broke at the end of the month and have to even borrow some money for transport?

If this is you then you are living beyond your means. No matter how little your salary is with proper planning it should last throughout the month.

If you want your salary to last the whole month, then you need to only spend money on the essentials. Pay rent, buy food, pay your water and electricity bill, set aside cash for transport etc. Instead of, spending it on expensive clothes and eating out.

3. You are in debt

The easiest way to tell if you are living beyond your means is to see how much debt you are in. How many people do you owe money to? Be it ‘mama mboga,’ your colleague or friend.

If you have to borrow money in order to do something like go out on the weekend or buy clothes or even pay rent, then you are living beyond your means.

Clearly, you cannot afford whatever it is you want to buy if you have to borrow money to buy it. So you need to cut down on such expenses and pay off all the debt you owe.

With debt, you cannot save money and saving is an important part of financial success.

2. Almost half your income is spent on rent

How much rent do you pay? What percentage of your salary is that? According to financial experts, your rent should not be more than a third of what you are earning. So for example, if you earn 30K then your rent should not exceed 10K.

Most people want to live in posh estates and as such end up spending over half their salary on rent. This means there is very little left over or none at all when you factor in the other expenses like water electricity and transport.

1. You never know where your money goes

Are you one of those people who always wonder where their money went? If you can never account for your money then you are living beyond your means because you have no budget in place.

Without a budget, it is difficult to control spending and as such you will never be able to save or use your money sparingly.

Ever since economic empowerment program (EEP) was introduced to RHFM. My entire life changed from there and then. And due to the experience and skill acquired from the EE program, I have been able to identify business opportunities and apply knowledge acquired from this program. On this note I would like us to look at how I progressed coherently in just one year. With Benedict of the financial difficulties in our community at a low level of individual student, I came up with an idea of extending financial assistance to my fellow members in form of credit accompanied with some interest. Immediately, I decided to invest in this venture with a handful of Ugshs 70,000. Surprisingly, in only three days, it earned me an interest of Ugshs 30,000.Then I came to realize I had not made a wrong choice and the EE program had been my stepping stone towards achieving my set goals. I therefore had to increase my capital by sacrificing and saving part of my pocket money. All this helped me to accumulate a reasonable but this amount was reduced by my decision to invest in my back home project where I acquired a heifer at ugsh250000, something that made my parents proud of me. However much I have been contented with my current status in this business masterminded by the EE Program. There are certain hiccups that arose. It was not all plain sailing, bad debtors have been the major challenge and this directly moves along with delayed payment. This was not all; there was also a challenge of limited supply compared to demand. I therefore tried to move out of these predicaments. I started giving discounts to customers who delay payment so that they could clear and I formed a society to help me meet the high demand by pooling incomes together to eliminate limited supply. We named this group, “Save a friend credit society”. The group is looking forward to opening an account and we hope to accelerate it to a higher level into a bigger institution. I am really humbled too say that I now operate in the whole school including extending services to the school support staff which has also minimized losses and increased profits. The total amount in supply has shot up to Ugs2000000. This has been due to proper record keeping. This has helped me to know all the debtors and reduce losses. I therefore with humility and gratitude thank for introducing the special EE program in Mbarara and for being there for us. I WIIL NEVER REGRET PARTICIPATING IN THE EEP
