In honor of Women's History Month, it's my pleasure to profile my colleague and friend, Sherry Keneson-Hall.

Sherry Keneson-Hall is a career Public Diplomacy Officer currently serving in the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs as the Fulbright Branch Chief for European and Eurasian (EUR) Programs. She oversees the U.S. Department of State’s exchange program in 46 countries and in partnership with 23 Fulbright Binational Commissions. She has previously served as the Assistant Public Affairs Officer in Conakry, Guinea; the Assistant Press Officer at the U.S. Mission to the European Union in Brussels, Belgium; the Cultural Affairs Officer in both Sofia, Bulgaria and Prague, Czech Republic, and as the Public Affairs Officer in The Hague, the Netherlands. In 2014, she won the Lois Roth Award for Cultural Diplomacy. She believes that Public Diplomacy programs can open doors to communities, which can lead to long lasting relationships and enhanced understanding between nations. Whether she is programming a Native American sculpture to talk about his craft, while also addressing the perils of segregating communities or combatting police corruption through programs to provide ethics training to academy recruits, while also addressing the economic roots of corruption with the Ministry of Justice, to helping to draft a grant to reopen a national library, closed for decades, she conducts her work with passion and creativity.

Before joining the Department of State, she worked as a reporter for the Daily Independent newspaper in Ashland, Kentucky. She holds an associate's degree from Ashland Community College (ACC) in Kentucky, a bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Mass Communications from Marshall University in West Virginia, and a master’s degree in Political Science and International Relations from the University of Rhode Island. At ACC she was co-valedictorian in 1997 and Journalism Student of the Year. At Marshall University she won the "Jeff Nathan Reporter of the Year Award." At the University of Rhode Island, she received a scholarship for serving as a full-time Teaching Assistant. She is married and has two sons.

As a young Foreign Service Officer from Half Moon Bay, California and a William & Mary graduate, Jennifer had the privilege of preparing a Secretary of State and First Lady visit to attend the inauguration of a newly elected Liberian head of state — and the first woman elected as head of state in Africa. “After a hectic week helping the Liberians organize a ceremony worthy of the importance of the day, I remember looking out on a sea of jubilant attendees, many of them women who had ridden for days and weeks across the continent to participate, and being so proud of the work we do, and the progress that we are collectively making for democracy and the advancement of women's rights.” - Jennifer, Foreign Service Officer, Public Diplomacy. #WomensHistoryMonth #DiverseDiplomat http://ow.ly/F4m350DXooz

Say hello to Said Bilani, a 2021 Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellow. Said earned his Bachelor's degree from Georgetown University, concentrating in International Affairs, and plans to further his study of global politics and national security at Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service. Currently residing in Washington D.C., Said is from Miami, Florida, and originally emigrated from Sidon, Lebanon.

When asked to offer a piece of advice for U.S. State Department aspirants and future applicants of the Pickering Fellowship, he offered a Chinese Proverb, “He who deliberates fully before taking a step will spend his entire life on one leg. The first step is to not be afraid and to be willing to put yourself out there. Albeit a challenging and competitive process, you miss a 100% of the shots you don’t take so embrace your vulnerability; you’d be surprised who would be willing to help you achieve your goals, dreams, etc. when you put your best foot forward, and lead with passion, promise, and resolve.”

To find out more about the Thomas Pickering Fellowship Program click here https://pickeringfellowship.org/ You may congratulate Said by leaving a comment below. Said, I wish you a happy and successful Foreign Service journey!
