The boat ramp at Abiquiu Lake will reopen May 30, 2020. The public is required to bring their own life jackets as the Loaner Life Jacket program is currently not in operation.

The boat ramp will be open for motorized traffic. All New Mexico State rules related to Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) will be adhered to, and staff will be monitoring for compliance.

Other day-use recreation areas open include the Cerrito Day Use Area; the Overlook Day Use Area, including picnic areas; and the downstream Rio Chama Day Use Area.

Due to low water levels, the swim beach area is not designated. However, the beach is open for swimming.

The main office/visitor center is open for phone calls, but is closed for public walk-ins at this time.

Day use fees have been waived until October 1, 2020. Normally, these fees are collected at Abiquiu from April 15 through October 15.

Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the young man who drowned Tuesday afternoon. While it is always hard when someone dies, it is especially difficult when it happens at a young age. Please remember to be safe when recreating at the lake this Memorial Day weekend; don't swim alone, wear a lifejacket, and be aware the water is still cold.

The Abiquiu release will increase to approximately 425 cfs at 1100, 11 May 2020. This will result in the river stage increasing by approximately 3.7 inches as measured at the USGS gage below the dam.

Release is to meet demand in the middle valley.

NM Fire Info

A couple years back Brian and I drove to Phoenix thru Holbrook and Payson. It’s a beautiful drive. On our way back from Heber to Holbrook we saw the devastation caused by brush fires. A trailer unwittingly had chains dragging and the sparks set off many fires. I think it was over 5000 acres burned.

Vehicles and trailers can be unintentional fire starters. If you are off-roading, remember that your exhaust system can reach temperatures over 1000°F! Driving or parking over dry grass can start wildfires. Be sure your trailer is roadworthy before heading out with good tires, greased bearings, and no dragging chains – whether it’s a car, truck, or off-highway vehicle – make sure it is current on all mechanical checkups and suited for off-road adventures. #ReadyForWildfire #WildfirePreparednessWeek

Received the following note from the Albuquerque Water Authority. Please send them a note to [email protected] and ask that they consider allowing the water level to increase at Abiquiu Reservoir. Share this to whomever you think will write in, perhaps we can encourage a little common sense and retain a little water during the spring runoff. "Our Customer Service Department forwarded to me your inquiry regarding retention of water in Abiquiu Reservoir. The reservoir is our primary storage site for water imported from southern Colorado as part of the San Juan-Chama Project, and as such is a critical part of Albuquerque’s water supply infrastructure. The Water Authority is sensitive to the needs that you mention and works with other agencies to ensure that releases from the reservoir are timed for optimum benefit to all stakeholders. In that vein, we already hold back water in the reservoir every year that we are otherwise permitted to release. This is all by way of saying that we are keeping as much San Juan-Chama water in Abiquiu as we can, and hope to increase storage levels for native water in future years. Please feel free to contact me with any additional questions you may have. Hello! Can anyone suggest a place in Abiquiu where I could do a book signing/talk this fall? My book, Water Mask was published this year by the University of Alaska Press. Many stories are about Alaska, as well as Wyoming and New Mexico. We are buying property in Abiquiu and have visited there for many years. We'll be there Sept. 24-Nov.12 this fall. Here's a link to the book: https://amzn.to/2GeKegQ Thank you!

Where is all this smoke coming from today?
Everything
Enjoyed visiting Abiquiu Lake but was surprised to see the water level so low, particularly with the recent abundant rain and run off. Found out that the lake is not allowed to keep back any additional water and that levels are kept artificially low. Write your Senator and Representatives to see if this can be changed! The lake should be allowed to retain a small percentage to build up its holding pool, for wildlife and recreation, for drinking water for communities downstream, as a protection against the lean/dry times ahead and still be able to protect against flooding downstream.
