Sweetwater Creek State Park

Check out what our resource team has been up to!

Sweetwater Creek has always been a popular spot for fishing – and it’s about to get even better. DNR staff and AmeriCorps volunteers recently dropped fish attractors into the lake. Fish are drawn to these structures, making them great spots to land a catch. Soon, park staff will even be able to point anglers in the right direction to find these locations. Stop by the bait shop or visitor center for more tips.

#ThrowbackThursday to March when there was still ice on the ground and... coming out of the ground? The phenomenon pictured below is referred to as "Needle Ice" and forms when the air is freezing, but the ground is not. Water in the ground is forced to the surface through capillary action and freezes in these spectacular ice pillars! Have you ever seen Needle Ice in person?

We recently picked up "Teaching the Trees" by Joan Maloof and had to share it with you! In a series of essays, Joan reflects on her experiences with different tree species, and opens up the world of trees to display the complex and beautiful web of life therein. It has been a pleasure to read, and has us looking at the trees in our park with even more appreciation (if that's even possible!).

This Memorial Day, our thoughts are with those who paid the ultimate price for love of country. Whether they fought for a flag that had 13 or 50 stars, we honor their sacrifice today.

Although Georgia's coast is more of a geographic feature than an entire region, we love it so much that we couldn't help but share! Georgia's coast is protected by barrier islands that were formed by sediment piling up on dunes when the prehistoric ocean receded. The sediment deposited on the back end of these island has led to the formation of Salt Marshes like these found at Skidaway Island State Park. Georgia actually contains 1/3 of the Salt Marshes along the eastern seaboard! #GeorgiaGeo

Georgia's smallest geographic region is the Appalachian Plateau. Like the Ridge and Valley region, the Plateau stretches nationally from New York To Alabama. You can get a great look at the southernmost part of this national region, specifically called the Cumberland Plateau, from Cloudland Canyon State Park. This is region is the only known occurrence of coal in Georgia. #GeorgiaGeo

In between the mountains lies the Ridge and Valley Region. Nationally this region actually stretches from New York to Alabama! Sandstone ridges interchange with valleys full of sedimentary deposits including limestone and shale. Although this isn't Georgia's most fertile soil, plenty of farmers have taken advantage of the relatively flat lands in the valleys. In one of these valleys, Chief Vann House Historic site preserves the prosperous plantation of James Vann, a Cherokee Indian leader. #GeorgiaGeo

One of our favorite things about Georgia is that it has it all: beaches, plains, lakes, rivers and some of the most beautiful mountains! The Blue Ridge Region of Georgia, as it's name suggests, contains the southern end of the Blue Ridge Mountains. These mountains cool air that comes up from the Gulf of Mexico, leading to plenty of rain and an excellent watershed for some of the rivers, like the Chattahoochee, that have shaped Georgia. Plus you can't beat the view; check out this pic from Black Rock Mountain State Park! #GeorgiaGeo

Most of Georgia's population can be found in the Piedmont region. The name of this region originates from the French words "Pied" and "Montage," as the region lies at the foot of the mountains. Unlike the Coastal Plain, it boasts a hard bedrock that is sometimes exposed as rivers wind their way through. This can be seen in the rapids of Sweetwater Creek State Park. #GeorgiaGeo

This close-up of one of the canyon walls at Providence Canyon State Outdoor Recreation Area gives us a rare look at the layers of sediment that make up the Coastal Plain. This region of Georgia was covered by a prehistoric ocean that left behind layers and layers of sandy soil. Look closely at the layers to spot irregularities formed by changing tides and currents over one million years ago! #GeorgiaGeo
