This will go down as one of the greatest. The Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing Groundbreaking in was spectacular! And on a personal note, it was so meaningful to welcome everyone to the place that shaped me and guided me into public service. What a special day.
One of the best parts of the job is visiting local businesses that I never knew existed. Today I presented a certificate to J. Corey Friedman, AH resident and owner of the CA Institute of Locksmithing to honor its 50th anniversary. They are one of the few full locksmithing schools in the country.
On the other side of the hall, Corey runs Nick Harris Detectives, “the Sherlock Holmes of the U.S.” This agency is over 100 years old! And no, I did not take the lie detector test. 😉
All this in !
The groundbreaking for the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing is happening THIS FRIDAY! Please note that the Liberty Canyon off-ramps and part of Liberty Canyon Road will be CLOSED to traffic on Friday, April 22 between 6am and 2pm. Please plan accordingly.
Whether you are celebrating Ramadan, Passover, Easter, or simply the fantastic weather, have a beautiful weekend!
This morning! Come have a cup of coffee with me!
Great visit today with -based A2 Biotherapeutics, an upstart biotech company developing cell therapies for cancer patients. Their research focuses on treatments that will target only tumor cells and not ravage the rest of the body. Fascinating and hopeful … so impressed with this local business!

Huh. I was out of town last week, so I missed that the Acorn Newspaper, unfortunately, chose to publish a paid ad that had completely false information in it. There is no “564 proposed new dwellings” project at Kanan/TO and that narrative around what is extremely complicated housing policy is misleading.
I am reposting here what I put on NextDoor for those of you who are not on that platform. If you have any questions, please feel free come straight to the source for factual information.
—————————————————————
Hi everyone,
I am the Mayor of Agoura Hills. I grew up here, am an AHS alum and have three generations of family living here. I love my hometown.
I’d like to clarify some inaccurate and incomplete information I’m seeing regarding the Housing Element Update, which every city in the State of CA needs to comply with.
1. The City of Agoura Hills has NOT approved a 500+ unit project on the Ralphs/Vons sites. There is no project, even in concept, that has been proposed, presented or reviewed.
2. The Ralphs/Vons centers are already zoned for mixed-use and have been for over a decade. The City has not changed the zoning in those areas, though it is included in our Housing Element Update (see #3).
3. The City Council is required to prove to the state once every eight years that we have enough zoning that COULD allow for our mandated housing numbers. In addition, we MUST allow, by state law, incentives that encourage higher density, lower-income units. As the majority of our town is in a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone, we appealed the numbers assigned to us by the state. We were denied. Therefore, we MUST allow higher density zoning to meet these numbers. Because we are so built-out already, we are left with nearly impossible choices that come with little or no support from the state to assist with infrastructure upgrades. If you watched or participated in our meetings, you saw how difficult it is to meet these mandates. We are constantly advocating with the State that we do not support these “one size fits all” mandates for our cities.
4. The Housing Element process was not a “surprise.” The Agoura Hills City Council went above and beyond our legal duty to educate and include the public on this. When we had our first Council meeting about the Housing Element, the Council was not comfortable voting on the updated element without having a public workshop. We held a second meeting, a full workshop, last year, with a panel of experts to educate the public about the state mandates, explain what we can and can’t control and gather the public’s input. The workshop was advertised in the Acorn, on social media, via the city’s email blast, in my newsletter, etc. I did an op-ed as well. We then held a third meeting where we had robust public comment on the housing element update. If you have not yet done so, I encourage you to sign up for city alerts, subscribe to my newsletter, or follow the relevant accounts on Facebook and/or Twitter so you can receive timely and accurate updates and be a part of the public process.
5. The numbers for the Housing Element for those sites are nowhere near 500+ units. Also, the City looked at every site within our borders for areas to consider for the housing element. When people say, “find other locations,” I can assure you, there are no more that would meet the requirements of the state housing agencies. They have strict guidelines on lot size, chances of redevelopment, etc. and the sites in some of our more industrial areas simply do not meet the criteria. We HAVE looked at all these sites. Another option to stay in compliance could be to rezone single family housing for higher density, and we have heard loud and clear that our residents do not want this. The State has left us no options.
I have been shouting from the rooftops about the housing mandates and I’m glad people are paying attention, but it’s important you have the correct information. You can always contact me at [email protected] for more clarification. In the meantime, if you disagree (or agree!) with the mandates, they come from the State, so please reach out to your Assemblymembers and State Senators as that is where the change must come from.
