From Dr. McClay's page, something we should all see:

A few of my students asked to interview me for a short documentary film project they were doing on school violence. Here is their final project. After the first watch, I sat speechless for a moment thinking about what the experience is for our kids in schools when it comes to living with the possibility of school violence.

A conversation with Agoura High School's new principal, Dr. Stephanie McClay, that highlights the changing environment of education and addresses the lurking…

LVUSD EXPANDING EARLY COLLEGE ACADEMY IN 2019-2020
In 2018, the Las Virgenes Unified School District launched an Early College Academy program in partnership with Moorpark College. Our current pilot cohort is in Grade 9. The program provides students with over 30 UC/CSU transferable credits via Dual Enrollment in Grades 9-12. Beyond this, the program develops the writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading skills necessary for a student to be successful in college coursework.

Given the success with our pilot cohort, LVUSD will be expanding the program to grades 6-10 for next school year. We are looking to recruit 25 students in grades 7 and 8 that display extraordinary potential, are interested in becoming part of a dual-enrollment cohort, and could benefit from this program.

More information is available via the program website: EarlyCollegeAcademyLV.org. An information night will be hosted on April 22nd at 6:00 PM at the Calabasas Performing Arts Center. If interested, please RSVP, via the link on the website.

If you want to help families impacted by the Woolsey Fire, please go to www.LVFireRelief.org. 100% of all donations received will go directly to the impacted families. LVFR was started by parents in our district who teamed up with the YMCA so all donations are tax-deductible and families will not be taxed on any contributions they receive. The school district is also in support of LVFR. At this time the donation center needs luggage and medium or large storage bins with lids. Due to the overwhelming response, they can no longer accept clothing and gift cards. Even if you cannot help financially, you can help by telling all your friends and families from out of the area to donate at www.LVFireRelief.org. Thank you!

Dear LVUSD Community,

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends. I am thrilled to share that our schools will be ready for students and staff to return on Monday! My heart was warmed by the fact that the students and staff I came in contact with, shared that they missed their friends, classmates, teachers, and school staff. I have been touched and inspired by the amazing efforts of the first responders, our unparalleled LVUSD staff, students, parents, four cities, community, and the people that gave up time with family during Thanksgiving to get our schools ready. Returning to a routine will be a welcome change after the challenges we have all experienced. Below are some specifics regarding our clean-up efforts:

-More than 200 clean-up personnel worked in LVUSD schools for the past 12 days.

-That equates to more than 25,000 hours of work.

-Deployed more than 300 air scrubbers inside our schools operating 24/7.

-Deployed more than 100 deodorizers inside our schools operating 24/7.

-Cleaned 1.2 million square feet of school space.

-Fifteen scissor lifts were brought in and used to clean walls and hard-to-reach places.

-Equipment was sent from as far away as Tennessee to aid the clean-up effort.

-Serviced 615 HVAC units and replaced their filters.

We will be keeping a number of air scrubbers and deodorizers over the next few days and weeks to ensure the indoor air quality remains high and to minimize odor.

The Woolsey and Hill Fires were a traumatic event for our entire community. Our staff and counselors are prepared to welcome and support your children as they return to school. To assist you and your family in processing trauma, we have collected excellent, age-appropriate resources which you can find on our website at https://www.community360.me/fire-trauma-resources

As I mentioned in previous communications, about 90 Las Virgenes families and two staff members lost their homes during the fires. If you would like to help these families, you can find opportunities at http://www.thefoundationlvs.org/help-fire-victims

It has been a very difficult two weeks for everyone, but we will continue to be here for each other and to lift each other up as we work through this and move forward together. I miss you...we miss you! The schools are not the same without the wonderful students and dedicated staff filling the classrooms. Can’t wait to see you all on Monday!

With heartfelt gratitude,

Dr. Dan Stepenosky
Superintendent
Las Virgenes Unified School District

Copied from Alicia Weintraub’s page:

I spoke to the people running the LV Fire Relief and they confirmed they do not need anymore clothes or bedding. Some items that people are asking for are:
-can openers (they have lots of canned goods to give out!)
-luggage
-backpacks and school supplies
-laundry baskets
-Rubbermaid type storage bins

In general they are asking for nonperishable food items, household paper products like toilet paper and paper towels, and basic cleaning supplies (mop, broom, dustpan, gloves, sponges, sprays, soap). They are asking that the items are new or pristine.

Family Information

Dear LVUSD Families and Staff,

Today I was able to walk several of our campuses to survey the damage from the Woolsey fire. While the fire came close to many of our campuses, our firefighters performed miracles to save our structures. We will be forever grateful for their heroism.

As we move into recovery efforts, our first and foremost concern will be the safety of every one of our students, parents, and staff members. For that reason, all Las Virgenes Schools will remain closed through at least Tuesday, November 13th so that the District can conduct a thorough and complete assessment with regard to safety and environmental quality (including surface, air, and water). We also recognize that many families remain under evacuation orders and that for some families fires or flare-ups are active close to their homes.

For those in need of emotional support, given the multiple events last week, please consider calling the Disaster Distress Helpline at 1-800-985-5990 or text “TalkWithUs” to 64746.

Also, in an effort to help us get a handle on the extent of the damage related to the fires, please complete the following survey: tinyurl.com/LVUSDFire

We will continue to update everyone in the Las Virgenes Unified School District family with new information as soon as it becomes available. Our thoughts are with you.

Dr. Dan Stepenosky Superintendent Las Virgenes Unified School District

We are heartbroken to know that so many members of our community are impacted by the area fires. In order to assist us in supporting you, please complete the survey below.
