Yesterday, the Courtney Center in Wagener hosted a food drive for the community. Golden Harvest Food bank, members of the Aiken County PRT staff, senior center volunteers, coaches, and some members of the Wagener-Sally football team distributed food to over 200 needy families in the area. It was very hard work, and extremely hot, but was well worth the effort!

Langley Pond Park inclusive playground mandatory site meeting took place this week, with around 15 vendors showing up. We are getting ready to have an amazing play system right in the heart of Aiken County. The scoring committee was all in attendance and can’t wait to review what the vendors come up with. Big things ahead for Aiken County!

Both Harrison-Caver Park and the Aiken County Recreation Center received nice updates to the playgrounds over the past week. PRT staff and our summer intern, Alan, replaced the fall surface and added a geotech underlayment to discourage grass growth. Great job, team!

Have a great weekend!

Audubon Action Alert: Save America's Open Spaces

On June 17th, the U.S. Senate passed the Great American Outdoors Act by a vote of 73 - 25.
--
At no additional cost to taxpayers, the bipartisan Great American Outdoors Act provides permanent funding to restore natural landscapes, enhance recreation, and protect wildlife while creating jobs and driving investment in local communities. Help save America's open spaces: let your elected officials know you support this important legislation!

The Land and Water Conservation Fund has helped to protect habitat in every state and nearly every county in the country. But it depends on Congress to approve funding every year.

Meet Juliette! One of the resident Eastern Box Turtles (Terrapene carolina carolina) at the Ruth Patrick Science Education Center!

Please meet Bert! The Southern Toad from Ruth Patrick Science Education Center! Did you know?
• Contrary to popular folklore, toads do not cause warts! And kissing one will not turn it into a prince.
• The average body length of southern toads is usually 1.5 to 3 inches long but have been found over 4 inches long. Males are smaller than females
• Southern toads can be found from southeast Virginia to the Florida Keys through the Atlantic coastal plain, and inland as far as western Mississippi and parts of southern Louisiana.
• Southern toads are nocturnal and can be found burrowed in sandy soil or debris. They are urbanized and quite comfortable in yards, parks and other human environments near a water source.
• Their skin has an irregular warty texture, with multiple warts within each dark spot, some of which are rough or spiny.
• Southern toads produce bufotoxin which can be toxic or foul-tasting to different predators.
• Toads are Insectivores. They eat mainly crickets, roaches, snails and other invertebrates.
• Some people call these common creatures “hop toads” and they do indeed move about in short hops rather than long leaps.

We have some nice parks, a pool, a couple of splash pads, 80 softball fields, and a train depot. Statesboro, GA has a first class water park and aquatic facility run by their county prt in a rural area probably half the size of the csra. Let's build a new parking garage though.
