General information

Aiken Families in Transition (AFIT) was founded in 2004 to provide a safe non-threatening, child-focused, neutral environment for children to visit with or be transferred to non-custodial parties or other family members. Aiken Families in Transition does this in the following ways: Providing a safe drop-off or exchange point where children may be transferred between a custodial party or other relative, or the non-custodial party; Helping ease the tensions of visitation arrangements for children and for both the custodial and non-custodial parties, eliminating their need to interact directly, thus diminishing opportunities for children to be subjected to family disputes; Ensuring the safety of all persons involved in the program, including staff and volunteers; Assisting families in carrying out their visitation requirements as stipulated by court orders; Directly supervise and monitor all interactions between participants and children, in a way that is non-stigmatizing to the child and other participants and which does not interfere with the natural course of the visits except where safety is an issue; Intervening on the child’s behalf, if his/her health, safety or welfare is at risk; Ensuring that both parties are following the centre’s policies and procedure guidelines, which are provided to clients, during the intake process; Providing to the courts or legal counsel upon request, factual reports on the interaction between participants and children during access visits or exchanges; Assisting anyone seeking to use our services where appropriate within the parameters of the service. Our staff are not lawyers, counselors or agents of either party and cannot be treated/considered as such; Developing and maintaining strong liaisons with professionals in the community. Providing supervised visitation services that are sensitive to and responsive to the needs of the community in which they are provided. Aiken Families in Transition provides services for families residing in Aiken, Barnwell, Edgefield, Lexington, Orangeburg, and Saluda Counties Aiken Families in Transition believes in collaborating with other organizations.
