Candidate at ASU Human Performance and Physical Education will defending a thesis entitled, "Stance Effect on Barbell Speed and Horizontal Displacement During the Pull Phases of the Clean". This will be held April 25, 2018 from 4:30-5:30 pm in East Campus 107. We hope to see you there!

Are you available between the hours of 3:00pm and 4:00pm April 18? The Graduate Student Success Center is hosting a webinar presented by Criss Cuervo entitled “Stay Centered, Increase Clarity: Mindfulness as a Leadership Practice”. The webinar will feature topics such as learning the benefits we gain from applying mindfulness to our lives and work, as well how we can influence and inspire others genuinely through authentic leadership. The webinar will be held at the GSSC. We hope to see you there!

The Graduate Student Success Center is hosting various events in April. Please see the list below for dates and more details. (All events will be held in the Graduate Student Success Center).

April 18: 3:00pm-4:00pm The GSSC will host a webinar hosted by Criss Cuervo. The topic “Stay Connect, Increase Clarity: Mindfulness as a Leadership Practice” focuses on the importance of mindfulness in our everyday lives, as well as how to inspire others through authentic leadership. Light refreshments will be provided. The webinar is free, so anyone interested is encouraged to participate.

April 19: 5:00pm-7:00pm is the 2018 Unidos Equity Leadership Institute Orientation. This is a meeting geared toward gaining understanding of the basics in preparation for the annual equity retreat. If you are interested in attending, please email Marcella Garcia at [email protected]

April 24: 5:00pm-7:00pm is a discussion around food equity and mindfulness led by Marlayna Martinez. This will entail a cooking demonstration. RSVP by sending your contact information to [email protected]. Space is limited so please sign up early!

Various dates throughout April: the GSSC will host a book talk and guided discussion of “Mindful Eating for the Beloved Community” by Alex Askew. This collections of essays looks at how food and the community have become disconnected.

The Graduate Student Success Center at Adams State University is pleased to announce the Graduate Study & Education Research Fund. This fund provides assistance for research costs to all graduate students at Adams State University. This includes thesis, dissertation and independent research. The CGS Research Committee reviews proposals and makes funding recommendations to the PPOHA Project Director and CGS Director. These applications are reviewed twice an academic year, the next application deadline date is March 1st.

If you are interested, the application guidelines can be viewed in the Information (link in Common Classroom left-hand panel) content folder on Blackboard.

Workshop Enrollment

The Graduate Student Success Center would like to remind graduate students and faculty that the opportunity to participate in the face-to-face workshops is still open. The six academic workshops will be offered Saturday, February 10, and Sunday, February 11. They are free of charge and can benefit graduate students in their graduate experience. Additionally, faculty have the unique opportunity of experiencing the workshops either in person or via Zoom, as well as get insight on the information offered to students.

All six of the academic workshops are being offered this semester on Saturday, February 10, and Sunday, February 11. Come join ASU for a special event October 2, 2017!
There will be a guest lecture given by Dr. Conrad Earnest called Tour de France or Tour de Folly: A Scientific and Historical Perspective of the Tour de France. This talk will be held at 6:00pm in Richardson Hall.
Conrad Earnest, Ph.D. is an exercise physiologist specializing in nutrition and exercise for health and sports performance.
Dr. Earnest is a former Professor of Health, and head of group at the University of Bath in the UK, an Associate Professor and Director of Exercise Biology at Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Vice-President of Research at The Cooper Institute in Dallas, TX.
His work has focused on a number of research themes involving the use of exercise and nutrition to improve health and exercise performance. Over time, he has examined the use of exercise as an intervention for sedentary and more complex patient populations, including hypertensive men and women, overweight, postmenopausal women, depression, aging (>75y), individuals with elevated CRP, HbA1c, cancer, autonomic dysfunction, and insulin resistance, and most recently, weight loss and food compensation during exercise. He currently has published 180 journal articles, some of which have been published in JAMA, JAMA Archives of Internal Medicine, and Lancet Oncology. His work has been cited over 12,000 times.
Dr. Earnest is one of the most published authors examining cyclists competing in the three week Grand Tours of Cycling: The Giro d’Italia, Tour de France and Vuelta a España. His research investigates the physiologic characteristics of the riders, as well as the exertional demands of one of the world’s most demanding sports, where allegations of doping have occurred since the early 1900’s.
