It was a pleasure and an honor to host nearly 200 City School District of Albany students at 6 Lodge today as we culminated 35 weeks of our Legal Lives curriculum.

In addition to meeting everybody from judges to defense attorneys to Albany County Sheriff Craig D.Apple Sr. and Albany Police Chief Brendan Cox, the kids got a tour of the courthouse and a pizza party at the end. They were also treated to DA Kindlon and Chief Assistant DA Joe Meany going head-to-head in mock trial closing arguments.

It's designed to enhance students' understanding of the law and seeks to prevent juvenile delinquency by developing critical and analytical thinking skills about the legal system before students reach middle school.

“Our newly formed Restorative Justice Bureau is dedicated to diverting people away from the criminal justice system, so it just made sense to re-establish Legal Lives as a way to reach youth and educate them about the perils of crime,” DA Kindlon said. “I think we can inspire kids by showing them that there’s an entire patchwork of legal professionals who are rooting for them to be successful members of society.”

These Legal Lives kids inspired us for 35 weeks, and today was the time to thank them.

Please note the new time for the June 5 event.

The colors of these flags mean community, and Albany has been at the forefront of this movement of inclusion for decades. I'm proud to stand with our elected officials today as we kick off Pride Month as these flags will fly over the city and serve as a reminder of our devotion to our community collective.
