It’s possible that the state Supreme Court might side with PNM and Avangrid in their appeal of the former PRC’s decision to reject the companies’ proposed merger. In case that happens or they file a new application, New Mexicans Against Avangrid believes the public deserves to be informed of new evidence and reminded about the dangers the merger poses for our state. Today, we release to the public our report compiling recent and irrefutable evidence of the negative impacts Avangrid and parent corporation Iberdrola have on customers in areas where they operate. Above and beyond the danger for ratepayers, these companies are equally bad for the environment—with top shareholders deeply invested in oil, coal and gas and likewise in efforts to undermine climate legislation and support climate-denying politicians. It’s every New Mexican's business who our state partners with for our energy needs. To learn more, download the report by visiting bit.ly/nmaareport or scanning the embedded QR code.

⚠️ On New Mexico in Focus’ May 12 The Line opinion panel, host Gene Grant and retired The Santa Fe New Mexican reporter Steve Terrell discussed what the restructuring of the state PRC does for public trust, PNM and Avangrid’s coordinated legal maneuvering and the fact that a hasty rejection of the prior PRC decision in opposition to PNM-Avangrid merger by a new, governor-appointed commission wouldn’t pass the ‘smell test.’ Hear longtime local political correspondent Terrell’s take—watch the whole segment on the PBS app or at bit.ly/theline512—then visit New Mexicans Against Avangrid’s website, newmexicansagainstavangrid.com, to examine the evidence and take action. ⚠️

⚠️📰 Earlier this week, The Santa Fe New Mexican reported that our state’s newly restructured Public Regulation Commission was reversing its decision to support the PNM-Avangrid merger—a notion that New Mexicans Against Avangrid would fully support—but then the newspaper amended the story content and headline, issuing the following correction:

"Correction: This story has been amended to reflect the following correction: A previous version incorrectly indicated the current Public Regulation Commission had shifted its stance on the proposed merger between Public Service Company of New Mexico and Avangrid, and reported legal briefs from the parties in the appeal were filed in recent months. The four briefs referenced in the story were filed between April and August 2022. The story incorrectly portrayed a June 2022 brief as the current position of the Public Regulation Commission, which has not filed a more recent brief. The parties in the case are scheduled to deliver oral arguments Sept. 15 before the state Supreme Court."

The reason why accurate journalism is so vital is the fact that while print and web headlines are readily accessible, most readers don’t seek out information on corrections and most publishers don’t make a point of letting their readers know about these important clarifications or corrections of misrepresented facts.

Please read and share this important coverage of our new governor-appointed PRC and the upcoming State Supreme Court hearing on remand of the PRC merger decision. Learn more on our website, https://newmexicansagainstavangrid.com. ⚠️📰

While the utilities say the PRC's 2021 rejection of the proposed merger was "arbitrary and capricious," the commission wants the New Mexico Supreme Court to affirm the decision.

⚠️📰 A 2022 Brown University Laboratory analysis revealed that Avangrid opposed more climate legislation in its Connecticut service area between 2013 and 2020 than ANY other group identified in the report. Avangrid spent $2.8 million lobbying AGAINST climate bills during that period. Tell the New Mexico PRC that our state won’t play host to Avangrid’s climate hypocrisy. On May 12, 2023, New Mexico in Focus’ The Line opinion panel discussed the proposed PNM-Avangrid merger, from ex parte communication concerns to the newly restructured Public Regulation Commission to the pending State Supreme Court decision and beyond. We highly recommend watching the entire segment—at bit.ly/theline512 or via the PBS app—but we’re sharing an excerpt of commentary by former State Representative Justine Fox-Young that succinctly encapsulates the well-founded reasons for public and ratepayer skepticism about the merger. ⚠️📰 The Energy & Policy Institute reports that Connecticut utility United Illuminating, an Avangrid subsidiary, masterminded a political campaign to protest a draft decision by the state’s Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURA) rejecting its requested rate hike. In Connecticut, where customers pay some of the highest utility bills in the country, United Illuminating (UI) mobilized its own employees and orgs it financially supports to submit comments opposing the decision. That draft decision rejected nearly all of UI’s request to increase distribution rates by ~5 percent—a rate hike that would have increased UI’s revenue by $130.7 million over the next three years—stating that it would allow less than a $2 million total increase. ⚠️📰
