VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
Ken Edelblute has been a Regional General Volunteer with the American Red Cross for eight years. During that time Ken has opened or operated over 40 shelters, fed people in remote locations during national disasters, responded to hundreds of house fires, and installed smoke detectors in many homes. Ken especially enjoys helping people get through difficult times. He hopes that others come and join him as a Red Cross volunteer. “Caring is the only skill needed to become a volunteer.” Learn more about becoming a volunteer at redcross.org/volunteer
Most of the 60,000 emergencies that the Red Cross responds to each year are local, personal disasters like home fires. They may not make the news, but we know they are just as devastating to the families affected.
--
Trained and available, Disaster Action Team volunteers are ready to respond to these emergencies, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. From offering a shoulder to cry on, to meeting any immediate needs for shelter or supplies, to connecting people with long term recovery services, our volunteers ensure that families don’t have to face tough times alone.

HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH
On this last day of Hispanic Heritage Month, we want to recognize Volunteer Services Recruitment Representative Kassandra Roybal. Her Hispanic heritage comes from Spain, through Mexico and New Mexico.
“My story starts when I was in high school and I was part of a Red Cross Club. After I graduated high school and was in college I started working as an instructor in Training Services in 2010, and took a role doing the scheduling and logistics for all the classes in NM. I moved over to financial development in 2012, worked in that department for 8 years and then in 2020 I joined the Volunteer Services as the recruiter here in NM.
“I love and stand by our mission. Over my 13-year career, I have been able to, firsthand, see what we do and I am so proud of everything we do all over the country. My American Red Cross team is my second family!”
As we continue to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, we want to recognize Raquel Rodriguez in our Biomed Department.
"I love my origin story. I am proud of my family and the person they taught me to be. My mother’s family was in Southern Arizona before it was Southern Arizona. Her Grandmother was Yaqui/Mayan Indian and her Grandfather was full Cahuilla Indian. As a child my mother moved to San Diego, where she also had family there. My maternal grandfather was Spanish, he is where I get my Hazel eyes from. He has been described as a Kirk Douglas doppelgänger and I agree. My mother and father met and married in 1967, in Oceanside, California, where I was born. My father’s family was in California while it was still Mexico. My father’s grandfather was Governor of Baja California before WWI. I have also heard stories of his family fighting with Pancho Villa, of course this was going on during the Mexican Revolution.
"I came to the Red Cross as Talent Acquisition Advisor and after 2 years in this role, I moved to Donor Services Recruitment.
"I love being part of something larger than myself. I enjoy talking and developing lasting sponsor relationships in our community to support our blood collections."
This past weekend, an amazing group of women leaders and philanthropists gathered at the 2023 American Red Cross Tiffany Circle National Summit in Washington, D.C., to support the American Red Cross and its humanitarian mission.
The Tiffany Circle is a community of women leaders who advance the American Red Cross mission to prevent and alleviate human suffering through a focused investment of time, talent, and treasure by engaging and embracing women locally, nationally, and internationally. Through their philanthropy, volunteerism, and influence, they are an incredible force for good in the world, and they are making real changes in the lives of others.
Representing the AZ/NM Region, Tiffany Circle members Pat Farmer and Lynn Sagara are pictured outside the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture with the Washington Monument in the background.
For World Mental Health Day, we spoke with Disaster Spiritual Care Volunteer, Pat Simmons. Pat has responded to 35 different Disaster Responses, the Maui Wildfires and Hurricane Ian are to name a few.

🇲🇽 Happy Hispanic Heritage Month from Red Cross CEO, Edgar R. Olivo (center)!
Edgar is a first born Mexican-American with his family originating in Zacatecas, Mexico. He joined as a Board Member for the Phoenix Chapter before transitioning to the role of CEO, but his earliest memory of the Red Cross was at a CPR class he took in High School before graduating in Casa Grande, Arizona.
When asked why he loves working at the Red Cross, Edgar said, “I love being in a position that can create opportunities for our community to do good humanitarian work and support each other during a time when extreme weather events are disrupting our lives. Being a Red Crosser gives me the tools to empower my community and build resiliency in our region.”

September is #NationalPreparednessMonth, the perfect time to prepare for these extreme weather events. Climate change is affecting people across the country as the U.S. faces more frequent and intense weather events. During National Preparedness Month, the American Red Cross urges everyone to prepare for these emergencies. In 2021 more than 40% of Americans, some 130 million people, were living in a county struck by a climate disaster. This summer, flooding and wildfires in Arizona and New Mexico and multiple heat waves nationwide clearly show how more intense climate-related disasters are happening more often and devastating communities. HOW TO GET READY FOR A DISASTER It takes three simple steps to help prepare your family for potential disasters — 1) Get a Kit. 2) Make a Plan. 3) Be Informed. Michael Young, Red Cross Regional Disaster Manager, talks about National Preparedness Month and the items you should have in a survival kit if a disaster strikes. Thank you, Michael! #FallintoService: The American Red Cross relies on volunteers to help prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies. Volunteers make up over 90 percent of the disaster workforce. Join today at Redcross.org/volunteertoday.
In October of 2014, The #RedCross launched the Home Fire Campaign, #SoundtheAlarm (STA), to reduce the number of lives lost to fires by installing smoke alarms and educating the public about fire safety. The Red Cross #HomeFire Campaign has helped save an amazing 1,275 lives since launching in October 2014. Arizona and New Mexico have been some of the top regions throughout the nation, leading this campaign. Since 2015, the AZNM Region has installed over 32,080 free smoke alarms and made thousands of homes safer, thanks to our community partners throughout Arizona and New Mexico. Ashley Bevier, Red Cross Regional Preparedness Manager, " It is truly inspiring to see how our volunteers' efforts collectively make a profound and lifesaving difference to all the families we have educated and help make their home safer." Please check out this safety video @ashleybevier and @Emilyhawbaker did to teach families about home fire safety tips and how to protect your family and pets.
