#FirePreventionWeekTipoftheDay #4 - This week is National Fire Prevention Week and a necessary time to look at preventing fires both at your office and at home.
Smoke Alarms
• Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home. For the best protection, interconnect all smoke alarms throughout the house. When one sounds, they all sound.
• Test smoke alarms at least once a month using the test button.
• Replace smoke alarms every ten years.
• Make sure everyone can hear the smoke alarms and teach your children what smoke alarms sound like and what to do when they hear one. #Firepreventionweek #EndHomeFires
NPM Red Cross Volunteer Michael Young
September is #NationalPreparednessMonth, the perfect time to prepare for these extreme weather events.
Climate change is affecting people across the country as the U.S. faces more frequent and intense weather events. During National Preparedness Month, the American Red Cross urges everyone to prepare for these emergencies.
In 2021 more than 40% of Americans, some 130 million people, were living in a county struck by a climate disaster. This summer, flooding and wildfires in Arizona and New Mexico and multiple heat waves nationwide clearly show how more intense climate-related disasters are happening more often and devastating communities.
HOW TO GET READY FOR A DISASTER
It takes three simple steps to help prepare your family for potential disasters — 1) Get a Kit. 2) Make a Plan. 3) Be Informed.
Michael Young, Red Cross Regional Disaster Manager, talks about National Preparedness Month and the items you should have in a survival kit if a disaster strikes. Thank you, Michael!
#FallintoService: The American Red Cross relies on volunteers to help prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies. Volunteers make up over 90 percent of the disaster workforce. Join today at Redcross.org/volunteertoday.
Home fire safety - NM/AZ
In October of 2014, The #RedCross launched the Home Fire Campaign, #SoundtheAlarm (STA), to reduce the number of lives lost to fires by installing smoke alarms and educating the public about fire safety.
The Red Cross #HomeFire Campaign has helped save an amazing 1,275 lives since launching in October 2014. Arizona and New Mexico have been some of the top regions throughout the nation, leading this campaign. Since 2015, the AZNM Region has installed over 32,080 free smoke alarms and made thousands of homes safer, thanks to our community partners throughout Arizona and New Mexico.
Ashley Bevier, Red Cross Regional Preparedness Manager, " It is truly inspiring to see how our volunteers' efforts collectively make a profound and lifesaving difference to all the families we have educated and help make their home safer."
Please check out this safety video @ashleybevier and @Emilyhawbaker did to teach families about home fire safety tips and how to protect your family and pets.

Jane Vigil former #NMFire Shelter Resident -
"No one should ever feel alone," said Jane Vigil.
It's traumatic enough to be evacuated from your home and move your family of five, Jane's husband and three grandsons they are raising, an 8 yr old, 3 yr old, and a one-year-old. But when evacuees' world is upside down, we have trained Red Cross volunteers at the shelters providing relief and support to residents like Jane and her family. "Disasters happen, but the volunteers showed support and comfort," said Jane Vigil. "Thank you to all the Red Cross volunteers."
The New Mexico team thanks all the volunteers who traveled from across the country to help New Mexico communities recover from wildfires and deliver the Red Cross mission.

NM Wildfire - Red Cross Volunteer Sharon Mills
Meet Sherra Mills, from Ashville, NC, who assists the Red Cross as a nurse in Disaster Health Services (DHS).
Sherra wanted to volunteer for the Red Cross from a young age, so when her last child was grown, she finally got to live out her dream. For one week each month, Sherra is on-call for the Red Cross for any medical emergency that has occurred due to a disaster. “I find out what medical needs they might have; things like glasses, medications, and medical equipment. When I’m on deployment, I’m in the shelters and go wherever I am needed. Yesterday I helped a gentleman pay for his medication. His pharmacy was going to charge him $279, and I was able to get it down to $8.75 using a pharmacy resource that I had. Every day is different, and I like the variety. I’ve learned that many of these people I help have lost everything. It’s the worst time of their lives, and if I can be there to even help with a Band-Aid, it makes them feel like they are seen and heard. I hope others consider joining the Red Cross. You can not only work nationally, but you can also work internationally. There is a job for everyone in the Red Cross!”
