Wow! Congratulations Lillian. Way to make NM proud!

CONGRATULATIONS Lillian!! She won the $250,000 TOP AWARD!! We are happy for you and glad all your hard work is paying off!!

"Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ: REGN) and Society for Science & the Public announced that Lillian Petersen, 17, of Los Alamos, New Mexico won the $250,000 top award in the Regeneron Science Talent Search 2020, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious science and math competition for high school seniors. For the first time in its 78-year history, the competition took place virtually, in order to keep finalists and their families safe during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Forty finalists, including Lillian, were honored tonight during a virtual award ceremony. More than $1.8 million was awarded to the finalists, who were evaluated based on the scientific rigor of their projects, their exceptional problem-solving abilities and their potential to become scientific leaders.

First place winner Lillian Petersen invented a simple tool for predicting harvests early in the growing season, which helps to improve food distribution planning and offers a promising resource to those working to address global food insecurity. Lillian first validated her tool, which analyzes daily satellite imagery using accepted measures of vegetation health, on known domestic crop data. She then tested it for countries in Africa and successfully predicted harvests with high accuracy against reported yields."

You're invited! Join us for our “Summer Road Trip” Webinar Series, July 15 to August 05 featuring Gary DeBoer, PhD., a summer faculty fellow in the AFRL Tech Engagement Office, a physical chemist and USPTO registered patent agent.

Dr. DeBoer is a professor of chemistry at LeTourneau University, the Christian Polytechnic University, with programs in engineering and aviation, where he teaches chemistry and patent law; and directs the LeTourneau Ingenuity Center, the goal of which is to restore faith in ingenuity.

Gary will provide tools to scientists and engineers, allowing them to recognize and protect their patentable work. Scientists and engineers can be more productive in the discovery and development of technologies if they have an operating knowledge of intellectual property. Gary hopes to bring the good news of patent law to scientists and engineers.

Senator Martin Heinrich

Throughout this unprecedented public health crisis, my staff and I have been working around the clock to connect the dots and facilitate the delivery of critical supplies like personal protective equipment to health providers who need them most all across New Mexico. I am grateful to the Air Force Research Lab and the National Security Agency’s Laboratory for Physical Sciences for helping coordinate this donation of face shields to Albuquerque’s VA Hospital. I will keep doing everything in my power to secure the funding and resources our frontline health care workers and first responders need to continue their lifesaving work.
