Greater Albuquerque Habitat for Humanity

Greater Albuquerque Habitat for Humanity Greater Albuquerque Habitat for Humanity builds community – one home, one family at a time – by making it possible for low-income families to own decent, affordable homes.

Greater Albuquerque Habitat for Humanity (GAHH) was founded in 1987 as a locally governed affiliate of the Habitat for Humanity movement worldwide. Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing organization founded in 1976. HFHI works in partnership with people in need to create simple, decent, affordable housing. We offer these homes to low-income families who are financially stable, but yet are unable to improve their living situation in today's housing market. These sales are at no profit to the affiliate and with no interest charged to the purchasing families.

Mission: Mission: Greater Albuquerque Habitat for Humanity builds community - one home, one family at a time - by making it possible for low income families to own simple, decent, affordable homes. It seeks to mobilize the resources to make decent housing for all people a matter conscience. www.habitatabq.org

There’s no way to thank our Veterans for everything they sacrifice, but on #VeteransDay, we have to try. Thank you to all our service men and women, both past and present for your sacrifice, your bravery, and the example you set for us all.

Habitat strives to honor our Veterans throughout the year. In fact, we are in the midst of building the Honor and Remember House, a home dedicated to honoring our Veterans and those that have served. The ReStore recognizes Veterans with a 10% discount every day and is currently collecting non-perishable food items for Thanksgiving boxes to be distributed through the Veterans Reintegration Center.

Most recently, Habitat partnered with SDV Construction, a service-disabled veteran owned small business, for #GivingTuesdayHabitatHonorDay!

When you make a gift on #GivingTuesday, December 1st, your name, or the name of a loved one you would like to honor, will be inscribed on a wall inside the Honor & Remember House.

Thank you for joining Habitat in honoring our Veterans today and every day.

Stories of Hope - Greater Albuquerque Habitat for Humanity

When Lori’s son was ten years old he asked, “Mom, why don’t you buy a house so we can move from this bad neighborhood?” Lori realized he was old enough to know the difference between safe and unsafe neighborhoods, but didn’t understand that his mother did not make enough money to afford a home in any neighborhood, good or bad. It broke her heart that she could not do better to keep her children safe.

Because of loving people like you, Lori now has the opportunity to make her dream of owning a home a reality. In fact, because of your support her family will move into their very first home -The House that ReStore Built - next year!

Diana has lived in her home for more than 20 years, raising her daughter as a single parent. Diagnosed with Degenerative Joint Disease, she wasn't able to keep up with basic repairs. As the years passed she grew embarrassed of her home.

With the help of our awesome volunteers, Habitat's Repair Program was able to paint and fix up around her home to make it safer and more attractive.

When she saw the improved exterior of her home, Diana exclaimed “This is a dream come true, thank you for making my home a better place to live in!"

Martin & Christine's virtual home dedication for Unity House IV

Martin & Christine's family moves into their home this weekend!

Join us as we celebrate their accomplishments and welcome them home during a virtual dedication on Saturday, August 22nd at 9am

Martin & Christine came to the U.S. as part of a refugee resettlement program in 2007. Now as the parents of 4 children, their family will be moving into their very own home – Unity House IV.

Even though Martin and Christine are Burundian descents, they have never been to that country. The United States is their first home country where they gained citizenship through the naturalization process. “Being selected by Habitat for Humanity is an amazing opportunity to realize our dreams and help our children to feel supported,” said Martin.

Habitat for Humanity’s global mission seeks to put God’s love into action by bringing people together to build homes, communities and hope. The faith community in Albuquerque has supported Habitat builds for decades – designating funds to pay for construction, volunteering, providing lunches and raising awareness about the need for affordable housing. Unity House IV is made possible through a collaboration of our diverse community of faith.

In June, these amazing masked volunteers made our first home repair project a success. Thank you all for stepping up to help a family in need!

The repair project was for a single mother who purchased her home in 2017. Recently diagnosed with cancer, she was concerned for her children's well-being and wanted to make sure that when she passed away her kids would have a stable place to live.

With the help of a few dedicated volunteers we were able to repair her retaining wall, making the backyard accessible so she could get around. The project took four days in the heat of June, with lots of digging, fixing and adding a second retaining wall.

Looking for an opportunity to help? We are in need of volunteers for our next Home Repair project on July 22nd. Send us a message with your contact information if you are interested in helping.

Strong, stable homes help build strong, stable communities. A decent place to live removes barriers to success that might have been a part of a family’s life for generations.

Families who are successful in completing the requirements for a Habitat Home receive a no-interest mortgage on a house built to accommodate their family size and budget. A decent place to live and an affordable mortgage create a situation where homeowners can save money, invest in education, pursue opportunity and have more financial stability.

The down payments and monthly mortgage payments are reinvested and used to build more houses through a revolving fund. In this way, we can ensure that Habitat homes will continue to meet the need for affordable housing in the Greater Albuquerque area.

Building Community

These families are smiling because of you

In New Mexico, one in eight households spend more than half of their income on housing. Families are forced to make difficult decisions every day. Pay the rent or buy nutritious food? Pay the mortgage or purchase life-saving medicine? With so many people struggling to find decent, affordable shelter, your support of our mission is a blessing to Habitat families.

Because of you, children have found a safe place to sleep every night. Parents are able to pay the bills on time, keep food on the table, and help their children with homework because they no longer have to work two or three jobs to pay the rent.

Families who apply to partner with Habitat are selected based on their level of need for better housing, their willingness to partner with us, and their ability to pay an affordable mortgage. Unlike any other program, families who qualify receive a 0% interest rate on their loan. Every week future homeowners join volunteers at the job site to build Habitat homes. Future homeowners also attend financial education and budget-planning classes. Through these activities, Habitat families are ready to take on the responsibility of owning a home and investing in their future.

This is a great organization which involves the persons it serves in helping to build other's houses while they wait for their own to start. In the process they begin building community before they move in. It was a joy to help with the Women's Build last summer and meet the mother and daughter who will be the new homeowners. Please donate to the Greater Albuquerque Habitat for Humanity if you can or Habitat for another community. Go Team!
