Health Matters NM

Health Matters NM HMNM's vision is that all families in New Mexico—especially in communities of color—will have equitable access to what they need to be healthy.

Health Matters New Mexico (HMNM) educates citizens and decision-makers about the impacts that neighborhood conditions have on health. HMNM also builds the capacity of community members to address the social, economic, and environmental conditions that shape the health of their communities. HMNM advocates for a health equity approach to create healthier neighborhoods by providing analysis, data, and other information for policymakers to make informed decisions on behalf of the communities they serve.

Mission: Health Matters New Mexico advocates for land use, social, and economic policies that will create healthy neighborhoods and resolve the disproportionate environmental burdens on communities of color and other economically vulnerable communities of New Mexico.

Why is it that we accept laws about drinking and driving and speeding due to the potential health risk and yet decision making groups don't use the same thinking for land use decisions when we know that our neighborhoods have a huge impact on our health??? We need to put precautionary thinking into our zoning and air quality laws.

Have you ever testified or given a comment at a hearing about land use or air quality?
How was that experience? Our toolkit has some tips on how to give effective comments.
Last night at a hearing about an another air quality permit in the South Valley, the company said they wanted to be a good neighbor. The City agency said they want to protect health and welfare. But why can't neighborhood residents sit down with the company and the City agency outside of a hearing to talk about issues without the limitations of a hearing???

Join us at the Mountain View Community Center tomorrow 9/13 at 6 pm to hear about a proposed expanded air quality permit in Mountain View. We need to voice our support that health matters. We need to ask the city and the company how more air toxins will protect health of nearby residents.

How does the City zoning code affect our health? Have you ever looked through the definitions sections to see which words are NOT defined? What if we defined 'health' and 'neighborhood'? That could be a powerful step in promoting healthy neighborhoods.
What other words should be defined?

We had a great Our Land Our health workshop in the South Valley last week. Did you know that the City and the County planning ordinances do NOT define what a neighborhood is?
Is it important to have legal definitions of a neighborhood in order to promote and protect neighborhood health??

BIG NEWS out of the International District: after years of delay and countless fatalities and injuries, Zuni will be getting a road diet. Construction will begin this week.

The four lane segments will be reduced to one through lane, one center turn and bike lanes.

Thank you City Councilor Pat Davis for fighting to complete this project and major thanks to former councilor Rey Garduño for laying the groundwork to get this done!
