That's how much Native women earn on average for every dollar white, non-Hispanic men made in 2019. Native women would have to work until today, September 8th, to make what white men made at the end of last year. It's time to end the pay gap.

Embattled education administrator resigns

Today, LESC Director Rachel Gudgel submitted her resignation after nearly 3 months of scrutiny and calls from Tribal Leaders and community advocates to do so.

To be clear, this was a necessary action but we remain concerned that because her resignation is not effective until February 18, 2022, she will continue to be an obstacle to overcome so that the state will take necessary and appropriate action to provide Native American, English language learner, disabled, and at risk youth with a uniform and sufficient education. We cannot wait any longer to fulfill the terms of the Yazzie-Martinez lawsuit and we need assurances that Rachel Gudgel will have no role in determining who her successor is. We need assurances that the selection process will be conducted with transparency and adequate consultation with Tribal Leaders and members of historically marginalized communities and that candidates who support the Tribal Remedy Framework and Transform Education NM platforms will be prioritized.

While Ms. Gudgel continues to reduce the voices of the people of color who called upon her to resign to be little more than “harassment” that has created “an atmosphere that is just too challenging” WE SHOULD FEEL PROUD of all the hard work that was done to keep the conversation going, to keep the story in the news, and to uplift the voices of people who have experienced racism in the education system and wish to transform it for the better. In our August 5th letter we stated that at the heart of the issue is the love we have for the children of New Mexico. That is still true and we will still do everything we can to ensure that they receive an education in a system that honors and celebrates them for everything they are.

Da’wah’eh. Ahéhee’. Thank you to everyone who made their voices heard on this issue and offered their support. #nmleg #nmpol

State education administrator Rachel Gudgel, who admitted slurring Native Americans, submitted her resignation from office Wednesday, though she expects to be paid for about six more months.

Calls continue for top aide to step down - Navajo Times

"On July 30, the All Pueblo Council of Governors hosted the “protecting the sacred trust” press conference, repeating the call for Rachel Gudgel to step down and for the Legislature to embrace a tribally-developed education plan, the Tribal Remedy Framework."

It has been almost a month since this press conference was held and LESC Director Rachel Gudgel has refused to heed the calls of Tribal Leaders and community advocates.

Our Executive Director Ahtza Chavez said, “A public apology is not sufficient enough to move on when the very people she’s asking forgiveness from continue to ask her to step down. She needs to take action by resigning and allowing another to take the helm on behalf of all our culturally diverse children.”

NAVA Education Project will continue to call upon Ms. Gudgel to do the right thing by stepping down.

Why the jump in the Native American population may be one of the hardest to explain

"Data released by the US Census Bureau last week showed that the number of people who identify as Native American -- alone or in combination with another race -- almost doubled from the previous census release in 2010."

Our Executive Director Ahtza Chavez is a featured voice in this story too!

#Census #Census2020 #CensusData #NativePopulation #NativeVoters #NMRedistricting

The Native American population grew to its largest size in generations after years of fighting for an accurate Census tally. The jump was surprising, experts and advocates say, and much more complicated than the result of successful outreach campaigns.

🗣The Native American Voting Rights Act has been officially introduced in Congress!

Native American voters continue to face unique challenges when exercising their right to vote, including, but not limited to, the adverse effects of voter suppression, partisan gerrymandering, disparate treatment, and discriminatory tactics.

This is why the Native American Voting Rights Act needs to be passed. Learn more: vote.narf.org

The truth seeps out, dismaying a handful of senators

It's entirely unfortunate and shameful that more than two weeks following a historic and heartfelt gathering of Tribal Leaders, legislators, and community advocates, that LESC Director Rachel Gudgel has still not resigned.

#ResignRachel #LESC #nmleg #nmpol

A handful of senators tried to hide and then minimize the misconduct of Rachel Gudgel, one of their favored state employees.

‼️TODAY‼️
The second to last of the first round of Citizen Redistricting Committee meetings will be held from 1pm - 5pm at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center in Albuquerque.

Members of the public are welcome and encouraged to attend, either in-person or virtually. The agenda and Zoom link for today's event can be found here: https://www.nmredistricting.org/event/citizen-redistricting-committee-meeting-7/.

This is also an important day for Tribal Leaders to express their concerns and interests regarding the 2021 redistricting process because so many of our traditional communities remain closed to ensure the health and safety of their citizens,

We come here to uplift their messages and to remind everyone that while there are many shared interests and important points of unity among Tribal communities, New Mexico's Tribes, Nations and Pueblos are independent sovereign nations and not a monolith.

But together we hope to maintain and improve the voting strength within the majority-Native American congressional, state house and senate districts, so that Native voters in each of those districts may continue to elect a candidate of their choice.

Let’s thank and fire up grassroots GOTV and election-integrity groups as we head into the thickest weeks of Election 2020. Just go to www.Devotee.Online and purchase a Devotee “Grassroots Support Pack” for Devotee to send to one of the following 5 groups with GOTV volunteers working hard in key states: • Black Leaders Organizing for Communities (WI); • ONE PA; • Living United for Change in Arizona; • Advance Carolina (NC); and • NAVA Education Project (NM). In the past few days, 4 of us sponsored grassroots support packages for 4 of these 5 favorite GOTV organizations – next up for a sponsorship is NAVA Education Project (NM). After we send NAVA some t-shirt love, we’ll circle back to the first 4 groups, perhaps add groups, and continue until current stocks of Devotee t-shirt packages run out. Please use “STRONG VOTER” as the shipping recipient’s name and your own address even though we won’t ship the gift packages to you. Please use your own name for the billing information. Packages will include a thank you card from you/sponsor and “all of us at Devotee.” I’ll post grassroots groups’ responses and photos. Thank you for all that you do to make the world a better place.
Let’s thank and fire up grassroots GOTV and election-integrity groups as we head into the thickest weeks of Election 2020. I’ve set up a special “Grassroots Gift Package” option on Devotee’s website at www.Devotee.Online to send volunteer appreciation gifts to: ONE PA; NAVA Education Project (NM); BLOC (WI); Advance Carolina (NC), LUCHA (AZ); Fair Fight (GA and nationwide); and Democracy Docket (nationwide). Please use “STRONG VOTER” as the shipping recipient’s name and your own address even though we won’t ship the gift packages to you. Please use your own name for the billing information.
