Countries are starting to hoard food, threatening global trade

“Given the problem that we are facing now, it’s not the moment to put these types of policies into place,” said Maximo Torero, chief economist at the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization. “On the contrary, it’s the moment to cooperate and coordinate.”

It’s not just grocery shoppers who are hoarding pantry staples. Some governments are moving to secure domestic food supplies during the conoravirus pandemic.

This morning we are at the International Trade Summit. The summit has brought leaders of U.S. Small Business Administration Export-Import Bank of the United States and more! When companies export goods or services, they create jobs and bring NEW money into the economy. Both are key to our Economic Development strategy. The City of Albuquerque is committed to providing opportunities for our local businesses to thrive, including business internationally.

“Who doesn’t want to be part of the Trillion Dollar Trade Economy? 2020 is the year to get into international trade. Opportunities are ripe. International Trade is about making money.” - David Glaccum, Associate Administrator, Office of International Trade at the U.S. Small Business Administration

Did you know that ABQ has a foreign trade zone that could be eliminating or deferring import tariffs? Did you know there is an office in Mexico City available to represent you in Mexico – for FREE? The New Mexico Trade Alliance can help connect you to foreign markets. In 2019 NM exported $4.8B worth of goods internationally. Mexico, China and Japan are the top of the list of importers of NM products. Local companies like D.H. Lescombes Winery & Bistro Albuquerque and Olive Tree Compounding Pharmacy have taken their companies global. #NMexports #NMTradeAlliance

As farmers are priced out globally, other nations use the opportunity to fill the gap, creating economies of scale and increasing global competition for when we "hopefully" end the trade war in our favor. Subsidies only further complicate this as they build inefficiencies in our production... adding to our future competitive DIS-advantage.
