Let's help these two handsome guys find a foster home.

Bear (A1814699), is two years old, he came in as a stray on April 6th. Poor guy is very stressed out in his kennel, but once he comes out, he is friendly and affectionate and loves to play with toys. He could really use a break from the shelter.

We also have TJ (A1815789), who is also two years old. He has been with us since May 26th and he also would like to have a hiatus from the shelter, if not a forever home. He definitely should meet any other dogs in the home, he is a volunteer favorite, a bit shy, but loves to go out on walks.

If you would like to know more about either Bear or TJ, please email us at [email protected]

PLEASE SHARE!! Help us get Bear and TJ an enjoyable vacation to rest and revive! #Awdshelterpets #Awdfosterpets #ADOPT 🐾🐾🐾

Great news! We have a foster for Mark! Mark came into the shelter with a fractured elbow. Dr Kat was able to fix it by placing a pin and wire to hold it together, so that it can heal. Mark's foster will have to make sure that Mark gets plenty of kennel rest so that he can recover and be ready for adoption. Thank you clinic staff for the AWWHHMAZING work you do taking care of our shelter pets. Fingers crossed🤞for a speedy recovery for Mark.

Kali, formerly known as Lady, when she lived in the shelter was a very lovely dog. She had very soulful eyes, you could just see the love and loyalty emanating from her. She caught Arthur's attention and he decided to give her a happy home that she deserves. We checked in with him today and he said she is doing GREAT! She loves people, she likes to play with her doggie housemate, and she enjoys morning walks. Thank you Arthur for noticing how special Kali is, we think so too!! #ADOPT #Awdshelterpets

Freyja is doing fabulous in her new home. Her mom Suzanne has experience with huskies which is really nice as Freyja is really really smart. Here at the shelter, she was in the clinic because she wasn't eating... out on her walks, she was petrified of the doors and going inside! Eventually, she progressed to walking right next to the wall while inside!!! Well,,, Freyja is loving her new sister Sky, learning the doggy door, knows her dog bed, likes being outside on the grounds, is doing fine being inside, loves her mommy and daddy and really likes that her mom mixes chicken, rice and veggies in with her kibble!!! All in all,, Freyja is exactly where she is meant to be!!! Suzanne and her husband are so happy they brought Freyja home!!! Freyja is the one 1/2 on her bed!!!! AND yes she has caught up on some sleep!!! How's that for a happy ending!??

Meet Peaches! She is currently in our clinic, recovering from FHO surgery on her back leg. Peaches goes on many doggy day outs with her favorite volunteers Arline and Billye. They have ventured to the mountains a few times, Old Town, Home Depot, Thrift Town, and just play time in the play yard. Peaches loves everyone. She is a mellow, gentle girl who loves to give kisses. She has met other dogs on her excursions and does just fine. She will be available for adoption soon!

This is Snuffles, he came into AWD with multiple wounds, cause unknown.
The Veterinary team has done an incredible job with this guy!! He is definitely one fortunate pup to have been brought in to AWD and saved with such hard work and dedication. The medical team is hoping to find a dedicated foster for 3 - 4 weeks, one who is willing to bring him in every 3 - 4 days to have medication applied to the wounds.

If you are interested in fostering Snuffles (A1815726), please contact us at [email protected] Please share for Snuffles.

Hi there! I'm Balboa, yes, like the boxer Rocky Balboa, except that I'm smaller, cuter and feistier. I'm a little cautious at first, but that's only because I would like to get to know you, so that we could be friends. Look at me here, just hanging out on Jeremy's lap in the lobby, waiting to be discovered. If you would like to meet me, please set up an adoption appointment at the eastside shelter. Hope to see you soon. ❤️, Balboa

Happiness comes in many forms, and for this very happy family, it came thru in the form of a long eared, low to the ground, sweet pup named Sadie. She managed to make everyone around her smile. Her family could not stop gushing over what a wonderful addition she is to their family. Thank you Schalk family for finding room in your hearts for one more dog, she is sure to bring many more years of delight and joy into your lives. #ADOPT #Awdshelterpets

Fiesta was a long term dog at our Eastside animal shelter. Her frustration in the kennel was weighing heavy on her. The longer she was with us, her spirits started to dwindle. This is something that is common when dogs are with us for long periods of time. As much as the staff and volunteers give their love and affection, what a dog like Fiesta really wants is a home to call her own.

Greg came in last week looking for a running and hiking companion. He went through kennel A, then kennel B, he finally made it into kennel Q and Fiesta caught his attention immediately. They went out to the play yard to get to know each other and it was a love connection! Fiesta has been home a couple of weeks now and together they have discovered that she loves hiking, exploring, running, and riding with Gregory. She is loved and adored!

Togo is a versatile and beautiful young male dog looking for a home. He avoids other dogs, and would like to be an only dog in his new home. With as much personality as Togo has, he is all anyone really needs! He likes to learn tricks, run agility, hike the Bosque and after that, have a snack and snuggle up to watch a show. He is housetrained and has not yet met a person he does not like. His foster mom reports that people have stopped and gotten out of their cars to meet him because he is so cute! Contact us at AWD if you are ready to give this smart and handsome dog a place in your heart and home!

Albuquerque Animal Welfare Offers Pet Safety Tips for the Fourth of July

July 4 is a wonderful day to celebrate with family and friends, but for animals it is a fearful, stressful and dangerous time. The fireworks often drive pets to act out of character, especially if left outside and unattended. They run away, jump over fences, and leap through screens and windows out of fear.

Animal Welfare is encouraging pet owners to protect their pets from potential harm by taking these simple precautions during the Fourth of July festivities.

1. Leave your pets at home and indoors. The noise of the fireworks for most pets could cause anxiety, fear and a desire to flee.
2. Keep pets in a lit, cool, calm closed room with familiar sounds and chew toys that will help to distract and make the animal feel safe.
3. Identification tags and microchips are a must in case the pet escapes. This will help to reunite the pets and the owners quickly and effectively.
4. Please make sure information on tags and microchips are updated.
If the pet gets especially stressed, ask your vet for help to calm your pet down.

Should your pet get lost and end up at either shelter, Animal Welfare wants to expedite the process. If your pet is already spayed or neutered, he or she will be returned to you free of charge. All you have to do is pick up your pet at the shelter. No appointment necessary.

06/24/2020

This is a story about a special dog named Ophelia, who is currently in foster care and is hoping to find the home that is just right for her. She has been in foster care since December, and after working very hard to overcome debilitating anxiety, she is ready for her forever home!

Ophelia is a beautiful, affectionate, 40 lb ish,
silly girl who loves her people. She has come so far to overcome the general anxiety of noises and people she had when she came into foster and will need some patient TLC to adjust to her new forever home. Ophelia is truly a joy to have in the house and is closely bonded with her people, but not "needy". She loves her chew toys and nylabones, is very sweet, and extremely well mannered in the house. She appreciates having her crate as a place of her own during the day, but it needs to be in a central location where her people are.Ophelia likes to sleep in her crate at night and is so happy and enthused every morning to greet her people and the new day.Even with her initial shyness, she is very social with people she trusts and thrives on attention. She did well in her crate during the day when her foster mom went to work and can be left alone for a period of time, but having a canine companion would be very beneficial for her. Even though she is not quite 2 years old, Ophelia has been a delightful companion to her housemate, 90 lb senior boy.

Ophelia would be a perfect companion to a single adult, couple, or family with no more than one older child due to her need for a more mellow household with a high degree of predictability.

Cheryl, Ophelia's foster would be more than thrilled to assist/ support Ophelia's adopter in regard to her anxiety and transition needs. She truly is a wonderful dog, but will need some care in transitioning to her new home. She had made remarkable progress and we would love nothing more than to see this sweet girl live a life happily ever after.

Here at Animal Welfare we love all dogs....but there is nothing like the sweet gentle soul of senior dogs. ❤️🥰

Pepper and Hali are sweet, wise and gentle 8 year old girls who have spent their whole lives together and would prefer to stay together. They love attention, cuddling, and gentle walks around the neighborhood. They seem to do well with dogs their size, but probably shouldn't be in a home with cats or other small animals. These two girls are currently residing in a foster home and would love a forever home of their own.

If you are interested in adopting these two sweethearts please send an email to our foster team at [email protected] to set-up a meet and greet.

Foster Friday

3 year old Snaxx is thriving in his foster home but he would love to find his forever home! Here's what his foster mom has to say about him:

Snaxx is a sweet, friendly and playful boy. He knows sit, down, shake, come, go and stay. He is completely house trained. He is well-mannered and won't try to open a door even it is not locked. He behaves so well when given a bath, just standing there to be washed. He LOVES going for a walk, either to the park or to the mountain. He will bring you the leash when he sees you are about to take him for a walk.

If you are interested in adopting Snaxx please send an email to our foster team at [email protected] to set-up a meet and greet.

I am so angry with you guys. We lost our baby late on the 10th. I made a list report on the 11th in the morning. There was a dog that was picked up that had been hit by a car that matched my baby. We went to your facility to see if we could identify the body and was told that the dog had been taken out to the landfill already. These dogs have families that loved them very much and the heartbreak is worse with no closure. The body of that dog was there less than 8 hours and you disposed of it. No one even checked to see if there was report made for this dog. You are so cruel and heartless and WILL be going back to speak to a supervisor. This is unacceptable. These poor dogs have families that need closure especially since we are offering $250 as a reward.
SASSAFRAS has had her little hysterectomy, so will be sending in her papers - Foster to Adopt! YAY!
Please Albuquerque, do not have a fireworks display at Los Altos which is right by the animal shelter. Those poor dogs will be terrified. Have it some place else.
If you are interested in learning more about OPHELIA, please message me, ask any questions you might have, and I'll get right back to you. Thank you! Cheryl-Lynn
Please be aware that there is an animal abuser shooting cats with an air gun near the 5000 block of San Luis Place, NW. Please keep an eye out and watch your pets. Thank you.
My poor cousin has forever wanted a pomeranian, yesterday she had an appointment for tomorrow to get her dream fur baby. She got a call from the ( EASTSIDE SHELTER ) saying that her appointment was still set up but the dog she wanted was put in foster care. Why they would say she can adopt the puppy but turn around and say the puppy was put in foster care? Why? My poor cousin is so sad
This is Lucky, he is a 7 year old chi x and weighs about 10 lbs. He is a sweet guy once you get to know him. He gets along with my dogs, not sure about cats or kids. He would do well with a single person or a couple. He likes to sleep under a blanket, is well behaved and potties outside. He is currently with me in foster care but is available through the shelter. He eats ground canned dog food only.
LOST CAT $500 reward. Our beloved light grey and white cat, Gaggles, got out of our house on 4/21 in the eagle ranch neighborhood near Eagle Ranch between Coors and Paseo. He is a light grey(blue) and white tabby, about 11lbs. stocky, green eyes. He is super sweet but may be scared since he's not used to be outside. He lost his collar in a neighbors yard, but he does have a microchip. Please call if you have any information. 505-385-6781. We are offering a reward, no questions asked.
It will be 3 weeks that I adopted Billy aka Demitry. He is a joy, smart, affectionate, terrier funny. I chased this little guy down from the West side Shelter to him being moved to East side shelter to be neutered. Whoever let him loose to run the busy streets and possibly be killed is a complete moron. It is an honor to be his new mom. Thank you to all the staff as I drove them crazy with my daily calls. I love him already, and people it takes about 3 weeks for pets to semi settle in to a new setting. Do not get upset or angry if they are not themselves for a couple of weeks. Give them a chance.
