10/26/2020

Halloween’s coming up and there’s a definite chill in the air. We just want to remind pet owners to take winter precautions so that you can keep your pets cozy no matter what the winter throws our way.

It's a common misconception that dogs and cats won't get cold because of their fur. If you are cold, your companion animal is cold. Most domestic cats and dogs are not well equipped for cold weather and can easily be susceptible to frostbite and hypothermia.

If your companion animal must remain outside, please make sure they have the proper shelter. Dog houses and cat shelters can be lined with straw. Straw is an inexpensive insulator that makes excellent bedding. It retains the animal's heat and evaporates moisture. Hay does not maintain these qualities. To use straw effectively, place a thick layer on the floor of your animal's shelter. Check the straw periodically for moisture and cleanliness. Switch it out when needed. Also, make sure to check your companion animal's water bowl frequently for freezing. Consider purchasing a heater.

The best place for any companion animal is right at home…inside your home. If at all possible animals, should be moved inside, especially during cold weather.

Wonder Woman Flies High

Princess Kara is as beautiful, wise and mighty as Wonder Woman. She stands for freedom, love, playing, fetching and swimming. First off, she is extremely cute and lovable, I'm sure you can see that for yourself! She also has great wisdom and really good manners. She can sit for treats like a "good girl" and she is very gentle. She LOVE LOVE LOVES to play, fetch the ball, or swim in the pool. She would love to go for long walks or maybe even be your hiking partner. Kara is a beacon of light to anyone who meets her. By this time, you are probably wondering why this wonderful Super Hero has not been adopted. It is her mission after all to find herself a perfect, loving forever home all to herself.

Ask about Kara. She is over at our Westside Shelter and I can't wait to meet you.

***UPDATE: ALL PIGS WERE ADOPTED***
The three little pigs

Once upon a time there was an old mother pig who had three little pigs. So when they were old enough, she sent them out into the world to find their own forever homes. So the first little pig built her house out of straw, the second little pig built her house out of sticks and the third little pig built his house out of news paper. Unfortunately, the houses didn’t withstand the winds so now the three little pigs are awaiting sturdy, perfect, fairytale homes. Will that home be yours?

These three little Guinea Pigs are waiting for their forever homes at our Eastside Shelter. Stop in during business hours, scan the QR code on the door to be placed in line, once it’s your turn, you will be allowed to enter the facility to meet these baby piggies. 🐖

I’m 12 years old, but I still have the spunk! I can play a perfect game of fetch with you! But I’m also a pretty independent dude and will entertain myself with toys when you are busy. In fact, my hobby is playing with toys of all kinds. With you or by myself! When it is time to relax, I am a complete couch potato and will cuddle up for a snuggle. I will be such a good companion to the family who sees how special I am! Please share and spread the word to your friends.

Yours truly, Gus Gus

**UPDATE: THANK YOU FOR SHARING! A FOSTER HAS BEEN FOUND**
Our wonderful volunteer Billye hanging with Sasha! We posted Sasha a few weeks ago. We are still trying to find a long term foster for her but so far no luck. So in the meantime, our staff and volunteers will be working with her. She is a joy to be around, super affectionate and loving. All she wants is to be near you! Sasha is six years old and weighs 99 lbs. She is recovering from FHO surgery on the left hip due to severe hip dysplasia. Once she’s doing well on that side, we’ll have to do the same surgery on the right. We anticipate that she will need to be in foster for 4-6 months. The foster will need to help with physical therapy to get her altered joints as mobile as possible during the recovery time. The foster will probably need to be able to help her stand up and get around for the first couple of weeks (using a towel or sling). The clinic will guide you though this process and help however we can! If you think you might be able to help or if you know someone, please email [email protected].

Here is another heartwarming adoption tail

Walter, formerly known as River, resided at Lucky Paws, and than he was adopted!!! His adopter says that he is incredibly sweet and gentle and the biggest teddy bear. Who said cats and dogs cannot get along?? 🐶🐱
He got exactly what he needed, a brother cat, named Phillip. These two are inseparable and love each other so much. Phillip has really helped Walter come out of his shell and show his true personality, which is a playful and loving companion. Can these two buddies be any cuter!? #awdpets #adopt 🐾🐾

***UPDATE: TATER WAS ADOPTED***
Greetings from 2 year old Tater

Tater hot potato tot has heart stopping good looks, accented by his cute floppy ears and contagious smile. One day, after a walk, he told us he was ready for a snuggle session by flopping down in his favorite staff member's lap. He adores going for walks, frolicking around the yard or playing a game of tug. After some playtime fun, Tater is ready to watch the next TV series marathon with you while sharing some of your yummy snacks, maybe he can share some tater tots, hotdogs and cheese with you?

If walks, playtime, food and TV marathons are your thing, come over to our Eastside Shelter, scan the QR code on the door to be placed in line to adopt Mr. Tater aka Tater Tot.

Tail waggin' happy adoption

Does anyone remember Boone? Boone was a long term dog resident at the shelter. When Covid-19 first hit Boone was one of the dogs sent to an emergency foster home. Well after only a few short weeks of fostering Boone, his foster mom, Cassandra decided that he would be staying. So she officially adopted him in May. She says "Boone is the perfect life partner, and he is so loving and sweet." Here are some of her favorite pictures of him in his home! She says "Thank you all for being supportive of me as a foster and giving me the privilege to have Boone in my life forever!"

We want to Thank Cassandra for fostering and adopting our sweet boy Boone and giving him an amazing home. It brings joy to our hearts and a smile to our faces!🥰🐾❤️

**UPDATE: MILO HAS BEEN TRANSFERED TO OUR EVERYDAY ADOPTION CENTER LOCATION INSIDE PETSMART ON EUBANK. STOP IN TO MEET HIM**
Milo is a sweet, handsome, and well-behaved 1 year old boy who's looking for a home of his own. Milo loves play time, walks, and training sessions, and also likes settling down on the couch after a busy day. Milo is in a foster home where he is learning all his house manners. He already knows how to sleep in a crate at night, be polite with visitors, and not beg for food. Here’s what his foster mom says about him:

"Milo is already housetrained. He usually sleeps in a crate at night and spends 4-6 hours in it during the day. He is somewhat high energy. I take him on a couple short walks or one long walk (3-4 miles) nearly every day. He also does really well if there are things going on in the house. If we are cooking dinner or working in the yard, he is happy to just hang out, follow us around and watch what is going on. If it is too quiet for too long he starts looking for ways to entertain himself. He has various toys. And he is very relaxed in the evenings and enjoys cuddling on the couch with us.

He is totally fine with my kids and their friends, but they are older - 13 yrs and up. He was also good with my 10 year old niece. He has done well with several dogs he has met. Sometimes on walks he gets excited and jumpy/barky with other dogs. I might guess that he could do well with a dog he can play with. My dog is too old and uninterested in playing, and my daughter's dog is quite small. He can be shy when meeting strangers. When we are around my friends who he doesn't know that well, he is good until someone approaches him to give him a pet, and then he will shy away. For the most part he is very gentle and sweet. He loves to be trained and has learned to sit, lay down, stay, play hide and seek, shake and give a high-five"

Milo has mild hip dysplasia in his left hip. No arthritis noted in the joint at this time. His right hip is normal and both stifles are normal. He will need to be on long term pain management. His adopter will need to follow up with their private veterinarian on a regular basis for monitoring.

If Milo sounds like the dog for you please send an email to our foster team to set up a time to meet Milo. [email protected]

I adopted Hazel from the Animal Welfare Westside location mid September. I was looking for a dog for awhile and though she was not in the best condition as a stray, 1 month later she is healthy and happy and enjoying her new life. She is a great dog with a lot of love to give and I wanted to share my success story and encourage all to adopt and not shop! The adoption process and staff at the Westside location was amazing and now I have a friend for life! 😇💞Thank you guys for doing what you do and giving many people & dogs happiness along the way.

Hello, this is Ace, my cute foster dog. I picked up Ace from the Abq East Side shelter only one week ago and he is just the sweetest thing. He was very nervous and stressed in the kennel but was super excited once out. Ace loves to snuggle, go on walks, play with other dogs just demolish his chew toys. He is a fun loving two year old who needs a home.
The top 2 pics were pics of my pup before she was adopted where she looks so sad. Her shelter name was Daisy and she now goes by Peaches. Tomorrow will be 2 weeks that she's been home. She is an amazing pup and I couldn't be happier. She loves to give kisses and snuggle all day long. She has this confidence about her now that shines even when she is occasionally unsure about the situation she's in. She can be stubborn at times but I have all the patience she needs to learn how to be a happy doggo. I love this little girl so much and wanted to thank the shelter staff and volunteers for helping me find her and her find me. I can't wait to grow old together lol. ❤❤
