I was honored to participate yesterday in New Day Youth & Family Services' celebration of their wonderful supporters and their awesome youth members at their Week of Giving taking place through Saturday. I’m always grateful for the energy, enthusiasm & commitment in the building - among leadership, staff, donors & participants. As their executive director SteveJohnson said so eloquently during his remarks, "There's no need to be homeless. And if a youth is homeless, there's no need to stay homeless. We now have the programs in place and can hook you into them no matter what your situation is."

Steve’s approach to helping our kids also just makes sense: find the spark that drives them, help them find just 2-3 meaningful connections in their community, and show them the opportunities that exist for their future. They'll take it from there. We are so fortunate to have New Day serving our community.

Check out the attached flyers to learn more about New Day Youth & Family Services' important work serving homeless youth in our community and how you might get involved this week or beyond.

New Mexico Wildlife Federation

Thank you to New Mexico Wildlife Federation for their great work on this issue!

In case you missed it this week: “The Land and Water Conservation Fund is vital to our economy and quality of life in this county and across New Mexico and I’m proud the County Commission is unified in its support,” said Bernalillo County Commissioner Maggie Hart Stebbins. “LWCF funds have been used to develop and beautify parks and sports fields throughout the county and LWCF helped us protect our Valle del Oro – the first Urban Wildlife Sanctuary in the United States. All New Mexicans should care about LWCF and Congress must act to re-authorize and fully fund it.”

OPINION | Congress should permanently reauthorize Land and Water Conservation Fund

Please help raise awareness and support the push to reauthorize the LWCF before it expires this fall. Otherwise "...we stand to lose the best instrument we have to protect our parks, water and wildlife habitats, conserve working farms and ranches, grow high-paying jobs and support local economies, and safeguard outdoor experiences for future generations. It time for us, and Congress, to do everything we can to reauthorize and fully fund LWCF."

Bernalillo County now offering loans to employees

Bernalillo County recently began offering an internal employee loan program to serve as an alternative to payday loans. It hit the ground on May 12th, almost two months ahead of the scheduled July 1st launch, thanks to excellent collaboration between the provider, True Connect, and County staff across our HR, legal, procurement, and finance departments. In its first month of operation it has already signed up 41 employees, enabling them to avoid high interest, predatory, payday loans that unfairly and egregiously drain resources from our community's most vulnerable members. A big thank you to Ona Porter at Prosperity Works for all of her efforts in pushing this forward. From her advocacy early last year, to the Commission’s approval last summer, to the work done by County staff and True Connect to get it out the door, this was a great example of how working together at the local level can bring real solutions from idea to policy to implementation in a short time frame. We need more programs like this. https://bit.ly/2JtOCbq

A place of hope for former inmates

I was extremely excited about the opening of Bernalillo County NM's Resource Re-entry Center last week. Instead of being dropped off in Downtown ABQ, often in the middle of the night and without any assistance, people being released from MDC will now have a place where they can rest, connect with resources and services, and rejoin the community with a much greater chance of success. Many thanks to Greg Perez, Gabe Nims, Lisa Simpson, and so many of the excellent people at the county and beyond who put in so many hours over several years to make this facility a reality. https://bit.ly/2kzuLMM

Instead of being dropped off on a street corner, people in custody will be brought to new re-entry center

New Mexico deserves more and better public safety

Great overview from State Representative Daymon Ely of the scale of the crime problem we're facing, and the will required to solve it. "All of this costs money, but we have the money." http://bit.ly/2EMRxsI

The citizens of New Mexico need more and better paid police officers, prosecutors, public defenders, judges, court staff, corrections officers, pre-trial service providers, and early childhood intervention, particularly at schools,

I was honored to join the first-ever graduates of Project ECHO's Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect curriculum last week, which was funded in part by a BernCo ACEs grant through the Behavioral Health Initiative. These wonderful students have shown their passion for helping the children and families of Bernalillo County NM by undergoing this training, and they are now brand new community health workers and home visitors working on prevention and early intervention. Thanks for their commitment!

New Mexico needs a TABOR Law TAxpayer Bill Of Rights. New Mexico Democrats in the State Legislature blew through a $900 million surplus in 2019 and a $800 million surplus in 2020 And raised taxes both years! Under TABOR, state and local governments cannot raise tax rates without voter approval and if revenues grow faster than the rate of inflation and population growth, government cannot spend the surplus revenues without voter approval We can't trust Democrats with the power to raise taxes any more Share this with your friends.
I've been looking for mental health services in Albuquerque, but the state-contracted insurance company refuses to send me a list of providers! I've written to the Depts. of Health, and Human Services, but Western Sky Community Care continues to lie that they will send a list, and then they refuse to. How can I get any help, if those who are supposed to help refuse to do so? Is there ANYONE who can, and will, help me???
Thank you so much for your support of the Mural Fest Block Party! Because of your help, we were able to make a huge amount of progress on painting the largest mural in New Mexico.
I'm disappointed in the "Resolution in Support of Gun Violence Reduction Measures" resolution you put forth. It will fix nothing. It will only criminalize law abiding citizens. Criminalizing private sales will not stop criminals. Only regular people who want to sell a used gun to a friend or family. Adding waiting periods will not stop criminals who buy guns from other criminals. It will hurt people who need a gun for defensive reasons, like the woman who just signed a restraining order on an abusive and threatening person. Colorado has lost tens of millions and had two politicians recalled due to the ban on standard capacity magazines. A multi million dollar corporation pulled up stakes and left the state over it. Changing a magazine in a gun takes less than a second. It does not make guns less lethal. Chicago has some of the highest shooting rates in the country yet also has some of the strictest gun control. How do you explain that combination? Gun control simply does not work on criminals.
Please support the Top Golf project. What a great use of that land and something for people in Albuquerque to do for fun. Please seriously consider supporting this project. Janet Bowers
