GiveABQ Teams with City to Get Furniture to Families in Need

GiveABQ and the City of Albuquerque recently teamed up to provide furniture to 40 families experiencing homelessness. Our goal was to collect furniture for as many as possible before the end of 2020.

GiveABQ is the donation center for nearly 100 local charities. Its warehouse is full of furniture, making it the perfect organization for the City to collaborate. Household goods are an essential aspect of stability for families who have been experiencing homelessness. When there are furnishings such as a sofa, a kitchen table, chairs, and dressers, it begins to feel like a home.

Recently, Isabel, a young 23-year-old, became estranged from her family due to a pregnancy. Now alone with no extended family or friends with space for her, she became homeless and eventually a client of HopeWorks, a local nonprofit participating in GiveABQ.
Hopeworks found her an apartment just a few days before the baby was due. One less thing to worry about, but she had no furniture. Her caseworker quickly connected Isabel with GiveABQ, where she could select living room furniture and several items for the baby's room.

GiveABQ even delivered it in time for the mother and baby's homecoming.

GiveABQ is about cooperation between nonprofits and organization and the City was glad to provide a supporting grant for this important work.

Mother and child are both doing exceptionally well. This young mom plans to pursue her education in the months to come with a home and compassionate community's support. When we donate furniture, we are helping people like Isabel and her newborn baby.
GiveABQ also picks up furniture donations, so giving has never been simpler. If you wish to donate, arrange a pickup at www.GiveABQ.org. You may also call 505.341.GIVE (4483).

I'm writing to you today concerned about being denied unemployment insurance on Workforce Solution's online application system as an independent contractor or 1099 worker. My work has been suspended by the COVID-19 guidelines. I had understood from the media that "gig workers" such as myself would be allowed to claim unemployment benefits. I filed taxes last year and also this year but the UI claims system "bot" denied my claim as ineligible and offers no recourse for appeal. The phone line for Workforce Solutions is too busy to get through. I just spent my last $100 on food. Now I am broke and will run out of food in about 10 days. Is there any way you can help me? Thanks in advance.
