Dear SAGE Family,

It has been my great honor and pleasure to serve as the Program Coordinator for SAGE Albuquerque over the last 5 years. I've met so many great people, had lots of laughs, celebrated lots of Pi Days, and along with you, helped create a thriving community of older LGBT folks.
I have felt a huge sense of responsibility to make our little corner of the LGBT world an inclusive, responsive, and well-run (albeit imperfect) organization. I'm ready to pass that torch to someone else. My last day is scheduled to be March 31 - but I'll still be around!
Please see below for the Program Coordinator Job Posting, in case you or someone you know might be interested.
Thanks for all of the support and good times you have given me over the years!
Fondly, Havens

SAGE PROGRAM COORDINATOR JOB POSTING

SAGE Albuquerque provides support for older LGBT people in the Albuquerque Metropolitan Area through advocacy, social programs, education, support groups, and resource distribution. We counter isolation, fear, and loneliness by creating a caring community of LGBT elders who will look out for each other and share some laughs. Our current Program Coordinator is stepping down from this position at the end of March 2021 and we are looking for applications to fill the Program Coordinator position moving forward.

The Program Coordinator position is a part time position for approximately 10 hours/week. This is a contractor position and pays $25/hour. The number of hours the coordinator works varies somewhat depending on the calendar; Pride and Thanksgiving to New Years are typically busy seasons for SAGE. This position would be a great fit for a self-starter who has connections to the Albuquerque LGBT community. The coordinator works independently and is supervised by the SAAC. The SAAC’s desired start date for this position is March 8, 2021. The position description is available here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1h4nUukCZ72Lk4HHmql_DM3Xr-FF7LU9J/view?usp=sharing.

We have just received funding for a second position to run the Friendly Voice program, a telephone check-in program. That position will need to finalize the program design, pilot test with a small population, and implement it. We anticipate that the person who fills this position would have a social work and/or program planning background. The two positions could be combined for a total of 20 hours/week, with the Friendly Voice hours being compensated at $35/hour.

If you have strong connections to the greater Albuquerque LGBT community and wish to be considered for this position, please send a resume and cover letter to Paul Oostenbrug at [email protected] and use a subject line “SAGE ALBUQUERQUE PROGRAM COORDINATOR EXPRESSION OF INTEREST.”

Here's a video about the proposed Federal Equality Act. Happily, NM already protects our rights to some extent. Marshall Martinez described a proposed update to the NM law at the Men's Coffee on Wednesday. So hopefully that NM law will be strengthened this year or next. #eqnm
Tomorrow is Giving Tuesday and I have made a personal goal of raising $1,500 for SAGE Albuquerque. Can I count on you tomorrow to pitch in?" Some folks can give small dollars like $10/$20 but remember ten people at $20 each adds up! Here is the donation link to use:
Here are some of the best films of 2021 for you in SAGE ABQ. Twilight's Kiss and Love is Strange were in the #wayoutwest film festival. The Cook Kids and A Secret Love were not but look topical and fun. Enjoy!

Want to share your story? It may demonstrate resilience, health and healing, community, or autonomy. Or it may not. Allison Ogawa (they/she) is a medical student and Medical Humanities Fellow at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. Born and raised in Albuquerque, Allison's fellowship research explores the experiences of LGBTQ+ older adults living in New Mexico during the Covid-19 pandemic. Their work is grounded in storytelling and draws from the practices of narrative medicine, storytelling, ethnography, and creative writing. Their goal is to help share the stories of LGBTQ+ New Mexicans in the 65+ age range with a focus on themes of resilience, health and healing, community, and autonomy. Allison is especially interested in speaking with people of color, people with chronic diseases, people with diverse housing situations and anyone who feels they have been impacted by the pandemic. Allison is teaming up with SAGE ABQ's storytelling initiative to support folks in sharing their story. Allison will interview those interested as part of their research and as an opportunity to reflect on one's own story. After the interview Allison will offer resources and support to help participants craft personal "stories" that folks can share themselves during the SAGE storytelling events. All parts of the process (interview with Allison, sharing one's own story at SAGE storytelling event) are completely optional. If you are interested or know someone you think might be interested, please get in with Paul Oostenbrug at [email protected] or Allison Ogawa at [email protected].

Hello - my gay Mentor, who I have known for 46 years, lives in the North Valley. He will be 80 this Wednesday. He is suffering from loneliness, some of it is Pandemic-related, and is in need of an LGBT companion. Does SAGE ABQ still match volunteers with LGBT Seniors? I was given a name & number to contact - Emilia Lopez. Not sure if this is current info. Can someone respond? Thanks very much!
