There are so many incredible journeys to #military service and this one is truly like no other. Airman 1st Class Nyarauch Chuol spent part of her childhood in a refugee camp in Ethiopia before emigrating to the U.S. with her family. She said the kindness of U.S. Service members, who provided medical support and vaccinations to refugees in the camp, inspired her to want to serve.

Tennessee ESGR State Chair Jim Mungenast presented an ESGR Pro Patria Award to Oak Ridge National Laboratory, for providing extraordinary support to The National Guard and #Reserve #employees, including Service members in the Tennessee National Guard.

The National Guard and Reserve comprise nearly 40% of our military's end strength, and a strong #employer/Service member relationship is a critical to their mission success. Employing U.S. Vets Conference - Home

What are you doing on 9/24? If you employ or are considering employing #NationalGuard or #Reserve service members, tune into the Expert Series Employing U.S. Vets virtual conference, National Guard and Reserve focused panel for #employers. The conference begins at 8am Eastern time, and this panel is at 10am. Registration is free.

Many employers view the time #employees spend training with the National Guard and Reserves negatively, as detracting focus from regular job duties. Such companies may fail to consider that this professional military training can help with civilian job duties. This panel of experts, moderated by ESGR's Corporate Engagement lead Bruce Townshend, with experts from the private and nonprofit sectors, will examine the ways that training given to members of the Guard and Reserves can be applicable to corporate America. They will also evaluate what companies can do to make themselves more attractive to Guard and Reserve employees, through policies such as continuing pay during military duties, continuing benefits and extra support for reservists and their families when they are deployed or called to active duty.

Today is POW/MIA Recognition Day, a time to remember and honor all those who endured and survived as prisoners of war, to remember those who are still missing, and to support their families who long to find their loved ones and bring them home.

To commemorate National POW/MIA Recongition Day, the Department of Defense, and the Defense POW / MIA Accounting Agency will each host ceremonies, details below.

Friday, Sept. 18 is National POW/MIA Recognition Day. Two ceremonies will be held by the Department of Defense and DPAA to honor our POW and MIA Americans.

“Let us never forget our Prisoners of War, Missing in Action, and their families, and why their tremendous sacrifices cannot be in vain,” said Kelly McKeague, DPAA's director. “In preserving and protecting our freedoms and way of life, they deserve our nation’s continued perseverance and gratitude.”

The first ceremony will be hosted by the Honorable David L. Norquist, Deputy Secretary of Defense, and held at the Pentagon at 2 p.m. EST (8 a.m. HST). The keynote speaker will be Air Force Gen. John E. Hyten, the Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The second ceremony will be hosted by Rear Adm. Darius Banaji, DPAA’s Deputy Director of Operations, and held at the DPAA facility in Hawaii at 10 a.m. HST (4 p.m. EST). The keynote speaker will be Allen Hoe, a Vietnam veteran and longtime advocate of the DPAA mission.

The Defense Media Activity will livestream both ceremonies online. The D.C. event can be watched at https://www.dvidshub.net/webcast/24883, and the Hawaii event at https://www.dvidshub.net/webcast/24868. Both events can also be watched live here on the DPAA page (https://www.facebook.com/dodpaa).

We hope you can join us online for one or both of these ceremonies!

“My #employer has always been supportive of my service by being very accommodating in giving me the time off when needed for any upcoming training and long terms deployments,” said U.S. Army Reserve Sgt. 1st Class Derek Dobell, an eastern region workstation support technician at the Washington State Department of Transportation. Dobell nominated his supervisor, Eastern Region IT Manager Brandon Traynham, for an #ESGR Patriot Award for going above and beyond to support his military service. Traynham’s support allowed Dobell not only to focus on his mission once he arrived at his deployment, but also gave him the opportunity to prepare for those missions, which is often a stressful period for those being deployed and their families.

#Employer support is critical to the success of #NationalGuard and #Reserve military service, and it's important to recognize supportive leaders. Do you want to thank your leader? Learn how at: https://esgr.mil/Employer-Awards/Patriot-Award
