Today is POW/MIA Recognition Day, a time to remember and honor all those who endured and survived as prisoners of war, to remember those who are still missing, and to support their families who long to find their loved ones and bring them home.

To commemorate National POW/MIA Recongition Day, the Department of Defense, and the Defense POW / MIA Accounting Agency will each host ceremonies, details below.

Friday, Sept. 18 is National POW/MIA Recognition Day. Two ceremonies will be held by the Department of Defense and DPAA to honor our POW and MIA Americans.

“Let us never forget our Prisoners of War, Missing in Action, and their families, and why their tremendous sacrifices cannot be in vain,” said Kelly McKeague, DPAA's director. “In preserving and protecting our freedoms and way of life, they deserve our nation’s continued perseverance and gratitude.”

The first ceremony will be hosted by the Honorable David L. Norquist, Deputy Secretary of Defense, and held at the Pentagon at 2 p.m. EST (8 a.m. HST). The keynote speaker will be Air Force Gen. John E. Hyten, the Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The second ceremony will be hosted by Rear Adm. Darius Banaji, DPAA’s Deputy Director of Operations, and held at the DPAA facility in Hawaii at 10 a.m. HST (4 p.m. EST). The keynote speaker will be Allen Hoe, a Vietnam veteran and longtime advocate of the DPAA mission.

The Defense Media Activity will livestream both ceremonies online. The D.C. event can be watched at https://www.dvidshub.net/webcast/24883, and the Hawaii event at https://www.dvidshub.net/webcast/24868. Both events can also be watched live here on the DPAA page (https://www.facebook.com/dodpaa).

We hope you can join us online for one or both of these ceremonies!

Director of the Air National Guard Lt. Gen Loh talked about Air National Guard recruiting and operations at the annual Air Force Association Air, Space, and Cyberspace Conference this week.

“My #employer has always been supportive of my service by being very accommodating in giving me the time off when needed for any upcoming training and long terms deployments,” said U.S. Army Reserve Sgt. 1st Class Derek Dobell, an eastern region workstation support technician at the Washington State Department of Transportation. Dobell nominated his supervisor, Eastern Region IT Manager Brandon Traynham, for an #ESGR Patriot Award for going above and beyond to support his military service. Traynham’s support allowed Dobell not only to focus on his mission once he arrived at his deployment, but also gave him the opportunity to prepare for those missions, which is often a stressful period for those being deployed and their families.

#Employer support is critical to the success of #NationalGuard and #Reserve military service, and it's important to recognize supportive leaders. Do you want to thank your leader? Learn how at: https://esgr.mil/Employer-Awards/Patriot-Award

Up to 80 hours of PTO for #GuardandReserve employees before and after deployments, differential pay for up to five years, care packages every two months, 16 hours of extra PTO for spouses, time off for Veterans Day; these are some of the policies that distinguish the patriotic character of Veterans United Home Loans. Following a tradition of honor and respect for military service, every employee attends military orientation class during new hire training, providing them with insight into the life of a Service member. For their above-and-beyond support for their military employees, Veterans United Home Loans is one of 15 recipients nationwide of the 2020 #SecDefFreedomAward!

Nominated by Senior Master Sgt. Adam L. Craig, Air National Guard.

The Independence Fund is wholly focused on Service members, from the veterans they serve to the #GuardandReserve members they employ. Military employees are recognized via personal correspondence from the CEO and senior leaders, experience face-to-face gratitude, and have the support and flexibility to meet training and deployment missions knowing their jobs, pay, and families are secure and well cared for. During training, reservists receive full pay and benefits without having to take PTO. Congratulations The Independence Fund, recipient of the 2020 #SecDefFreedomAward!

According to numerous #GuardandReserve members who work for Shell, the company’s treatment of them is as genuine and generous as the company is big. Their gratefulness stems from the culture of support Shell has embraced to ensure the readiness and welfare of their military employees and their families. The expectation of 100 percent company support extends top to bottom and across all business units, and permeates all decisions affecting this contingent, from assistive financial policies, to flexible scheduling for various time demands on the employee, to outreach and support for family members during transitions. Shell is honored as one of 15 2020 #SecDefFreedomAward recipients. Well deserved!

Nominated by Maj. Bill Foran, Marine Forces Reserve.

Having received just about every award ESGR offers—many times over—and having been a #SecDefFreedomAward finalist the previous two years, Ecolab has a proven track record supporting its #GuardAndReserve employees. Couple that with generous leave policies, an active recruitment and retention program, company-wide recognitions of its Service member employees, and a culture of support, and it’s easy to see why Ecolab has been selected as a 2020 Freedom Award recipient. Help us congratulate them!

The staff and leadership at Children's Hospital & Medical Center go out of their way to recognize and support the service of their Guard and Reserve employees. Case in point: when a Service member colleague got deployed, they created a life size cut out of the deployed Service member. Children’s Hospital also actively recruits #GuardAndReserve members, created a Veterans group to publicize military opportunities and recognize deployed Service members, and routinely sends care packages to deployed employees. This year, DoD recognizes Children's Hospital & Medical Center as one of 15 recipients of the 2020 #SecDefFreedomAward!

Ninety percent of their hires are military and a quarter are in the #GuardandReserve. Those facts alone testify to Battlefield Vegas’ commitment to the military, but they also keep tabs on spouses when their Guard and Reserve employees are deployed, send care packages, and offer flexible scheduling so their employees can drill on the weekends and still put in a full work week. For those and other efforts, Battlefield: Vegas is an honored recipient of this year’s #SecDefFreedomAward.

Nominated by Spc. Josh Vera, National Guard.

The DoD #SecDefFreedomAward stands as no other in recognizing the pivotal role employers play in our national defense. Going above and beyond in their policies and individual support to ensure their Guard and Reserve employees stay ready and resilient earned 15 U.S. employers the honor of that distinction. The 2020 recipients share a common sacrifice and a patriotic spirit helping employees bridge their roles as civilian workers and military Service members. This is a prestigious award and these are extraordinary recipients.
