As I wrap up my executive steering committee leadership meeting this week, I reflect on the words of leaders before me that provide me wisdom, perspective, and enthusiasm for the future. Let us remember history, honor those before us, and hold those lessons near and dear to our heart as we move forward. In 2022 there have been many milestones for women in the military I cannot wait to see what the rest of the year will bring to us next.

🇺🇸That is the reality for women veterans who serve. They are 2 to 3 times more likely to be homeless than any other population and the fastest growing homeless population in the US.

In honor of National Aviation Day🛩️​, we're celebrating 👏​Lieutenant Amanda Lee, the first female demonstration pilot 👩‍✈️ in the 76-year history of the Blue Angels!

The Blue Angels are an elite flight squadron which performs spectacular air demonstrations for 11 million spectators each year. Among other requirements, to be eligible to become a Blue Angel, aviators must be carrier-qualified with at least 1,250 tactical jet flight hours by September 30 of the year applying😇.

In honor of the establishment of the US Navy Women’s Reserve (WAVES) on this day in 1942, check out this Military Women's Memorial collection item: Marion (Enright) Bench's WAVES uniform.

The Navy Women's Reserve, called Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES), was established on July 30, 1942. Before the war was over, more than 80,000 WAVES filled shore billets in a large variety of jobs in communications, intelligence, supply, medicine, and administration. In December 1944, Harriet Ida Pickens and Frances E. Wills became the first two African American WAVE officers commissioned.

Marion (Enright) Bench was one of the first WAVES in the Navy and one of the pioneer women in personnel management. She selected 90% of the first 1,000 women to be sent to Officer Training Schools. In January 1943, she replaced a Navy Lt Commander Liaison Officer between the Bureau of Naval Personnel and the Congress, Senate, White House, and the Secretary of the Navy in connection with appointments and assignments of male officers. She also worked as an Assistant to Mildred McAfee, the Director of Women in the Navy. After her discharge in the fall of 1945, she became the Administrative Assistant to Norman Bel Geddes, and supervised and managed the production of the model photographic history of "The Battle of Midway" for the Navy.
