LSUA Psychology Club

LSUA Psychology Club and AFSP are partnering to bring suicide prevention to Alexandria. Choosing death by suicide has increased steadily for the past 5 years. The US average rate for suicide is 13.26% per 100,000 individuals. However for Louisiana the suicide rate is 15.26% (CDC, 2015), an increase from 14.31% in 2014. When considering LSUA’s student population, the suicide rates for Evangeline Parish (20.89%), Avoyelles Parish (17.62%), Livingston Parish (16.67%), Pointe Coupee Parish (16.56%) and St. Landry Parish (15.8%) are all well above the national average and, according the most recent LSUA data, 70.06% of our student population hail from those parishes.

As a result of the money that was raised from the 2016 Out of the Darkness Suicide Prevention Walk, there will be a safeTALK for LSUA’s students, faculty, and staff on February 17th from 9am- 12 noon. On February 18th, there will be a safeTALK for the larger community and anyone may attend. SafeTALK is a training that prepares anyone over the age of 15 to identify persons with thoughts of suicide and connect them to suicide first aid resources. Most people with thoughts of suicide want help to stay safe. Alert helpers know how to use these opportunities to support that desire for safety. As a safeTALK-trained suicide alert helper, you will be better able to:
• Move beyond common tendencies to miss, dismiss or avoid suicide;
• Identify people who have thoughts of suicide;
• Apply the TALK steps (Tell, Ask, Listen and KeepSafe) to connect a person with suicide thoughts to suicide first aid, intervention caregivers.

This training is being offered by the Louisiana Chapter of AFSP, at no charge due to the funds raised at the LSU-A Campus Walk. To participate in the training, you must register by choosing the appropriate link and make a commitment to stay the entire 3 hours.
