Volunteers of America Cenla

Volunteers of America Cenla Faith-based nonprofit organization that provides affordable housing and services to families, children, veterans, and individuals with disabilities.
Volunteers of America of North and Central Louisiana is a locally-governed and locally-managed affiliate of one of the nation's oldest, largest and most diversified faith-based charities. Our national organization has more than 115 years of experience and service with a mission to "reach and uplift" the American people. Today, we touch the lives of thousands in need. We help everyone from inner-city kids in Shreveport to people with mental illness in Alexandria, while building healthier, more compassionate communities across north and central Louisiana.

Dear Community of Alexandria, as it is the new year, should you be looking to downsize and get rid of household items no longer needed, we at VOA are in need of said items. We have clients that are in the process of transitioning into new homes and any household items such as furniture, kitchen ware, bedroom/bathroom items are needed. We also have a special request of a large/X-large jacket for one of our female clients. We thank you for your giving spirit and generosity!

APD is engaging in “reverse panhandling” today. Chief King and senior staff are handing out cards to drivers to encourage alternatives to handing money to panhandlers. The cards list three organizations that provide direct support to the homeless and yield better long-term results than handouts.

We know that folks’ hearts are in the right place, however enabling panhandlers only keeps them on the street corners. We encourage Alexandria and Cenla residents to instead donate that money to an organization that provides more permanent solutions to the homeless.

Thanks to Kinetix Solutions and the Central Louisiana Homeless Coalition for helping to provide these cards and solutions.

Our Land and Timber Department is still spreading the love from their recent fundraising efforts! Today, a donation was given to Volunteers of America Cenla to be used for the organization's Parents as Teachers program. Volunteers of America's mission is to help the most vulnerable attain independence and quality of life by providing services in behavioral health, affordable housing, and children and families.
Recent donations were also made to other local non-profits, including the Salvation Army, Hope House, and the Winn Parish Department of Child and Family Services.

DONATIONS NEEDED!
We have a young woman who has been homeless for many years, who was in desperate need of our help. As part of our VoA Rapid Rehousing program we were able to get her her very own apartment! She is overjoyed, in shock, and eternally grateful for to be given the opportunity to turn her life around. As you can imagine, she does not have the items needed to bring it from a house to a home.
We were able to find someone to donate the stove, microwave, and utensils!!!
But she is still in need of a refrigerator, a shower curtain rod, regular curtain rods and other unessential items such as decor, rugs, lamps etc.

We absolutely love this!

After opening in February one of the things that surprised us the most was how many people struggled to afford just a simple place to lay their head at night. We realized how we take this most basic necessity for granted. No one should have to sleep on the floor. So from now until the end of June we have partnered with Volunteers of America to help fill this need for their clients. They have a wonderful program helping the homeless of Cenla get back on their feet and into homes. Finding furniture and other houseware items is challenging. We will be donating a twin mattress for every Cool Phase and Copper gel memory foam sold during that time. We are also allowing anyone who wants to donate one to purchase a twin at cost for us to deliver. If you have been on the fence about buying one now is the time. Cenla has blessed us since we opened the doors in February and we want to pay that forward. Please help us get the word out by sharing this post!

Excited to have such an outstanding individual leading the CLHC and serving our community’s homeless population. Looking forward to working together as we seek to address the homeless needs and move them into affordable housing!

The Central Louisiana Homeless Coalition Board of Directors announces that they have selected Joseph Buzzetta to serve as the agency’s new Executive Director. “After a very thorough search, the Board is excited to welcome Joseph Buzzetta to lead the CLHC into the future,” said Kim Boyd, President of CLHC’s Board. “Joseph brings extensive knowledge of our homeless population as well as “in the trenches” experience to our agency, and I especially value that he has focused his career on our population who are currently experiencing or at risk of experiencing homelessness.”
Joseph Buzzetta began his tenure as E.D. at CLHC on June 1.

Serving God by Serving Others

Our focus at Volunteers of America is to take on the most difficult tasks to serve those most in need. Our work centers around Children & Families, Affordable Housing and Behavioral Health.

We serve a wide array of individuals, including adults with mental illnesses, low income families, children involved in the state’s custody (DCFS), Veterans, homeless, those needing affordable housing, expectant and/or single mothers, and more.

Our approach is not a quick fix, but an ongoing support system and long-term investment in improving the lives of those we serve by helping them move to greater independence and self-sustainability.

Since 1986, we have operated under a mission that “provides opportunity, promotes dignity, and inspires change in all who find their way to us.” Our efforts revolve around our faith and the belief that we serve God by serving others.
