Volunteers of America Cenla

Volunteers of America Cenla Faith-based nonprofit organization that provides affordable housing and services to families, children, veterans, and individuals with disabilities.
Volunteers of America of North and Central Louisiana is a locally-governed and locally-managed affiliate of one of the nation's oldest, largest and most diversified faith-based charities. Our national organization has more than 115 years of experience and service with a mission to "reach and uplift" the American people. Today, we touch the lives of thousands in need. We help everyone from inner-city kids in Shreveport to people with mental illness in Alexandria, while building healthier, more compassionate communities across north and central Louisiana.

Our communities are in turmoil and our souls are weary.
Volunteers of America in North and Central Louisiana joins Visionaries, our community, organizations, and individuals across the country and the world fighting for diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice for all. We stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters. We will continue to work toward solutions consistent with our core values, and meet our mission to reach and uplift all people.
Now is a time to come together to listen, to pray, to learn from one another, and to give hope. VIsit www.voadayofhope.org. #voadayofhope #voawhy #blacklivesmatter

Volunteers of America is working with the state Department of Education to disseminate needed emergency supplies to child care providers in Central Louisiana, so that families can go back to work and the economy can begin restarting.

We need help identifying a possible warehouse space here in Alexandria where the emergency supplies can be delivered and out of which we can distribute the supplies beginning in approximately one week's time.

Our team members would be overseeing the delivery and distribution—we just need space for 40 4x4 pallets to be delivered and sorted through. We would aim to have distribution complete in no more than one week. Ideally the space would have a loading dock and would be enclosed, in a climate-controlled space where items could be kept secure.

Please contact Joshua Blackwell at [email protected] with information.

APD is engaging in “reverse panhandling” today. Chief King and senior staff are handing out cards to drivers to encourage alternatives to handing money to panhandlers. The cards list three organizations that provide direct support to the homeless and yield better long-term results than handouts.

We know that folks’ hearts are in the right place, however enabling panhandlers only keeps them on the street corners. We encourage Alexandria and Cenla residents to instead donate that money to an organization that provides more permanent solutions to the homeless.

Thanks to Kinetix Solutions and the Central Louisiana Homeless Coalition for helping to provide these cards and solutions.

Serving God by Serving Others

Our focus at Volunteers of America is to take on the most difficult tasks to serve those most in need. Our work centers around Children & Families, Affordable Housing and Behavioral Health.

We serve a wide array of individuals, including adults with mental illnesses, low income families, children involved in the state’s custody (DCFS), Veterans, homeless, those needing affordable housing, expectant and/or single mothers, and more.

Our approach is not a quick fix, but an ongoing support system and long-term investment in improving the lives of those we serve by helping them move to greater independence and self-sustainability.

Since 1986, we have operated under a mission that “provides opportunity, promotes dignity, and inspires change in all who find their way to us.” Our efforts revolve around our faith and the belief that we serve God by serving others.
